McCain's Steroids Push Puts Him in '08 Mix
WASHINGTON -- Sen. John McCain, the straight-talking Republican who often challenges the GOP establishment, has taken on a headline-grabbing issue -- steroids in baseball -- and generated talk of a presidential bid in 2008.

Amid revelations about baseball's biggest names, McCain has threatened to push legislation early next year if Major League Baseball and the players do not clean up their act. McCain long has advocated harsher penalties for athletes caught using performance-enhancing drugs.

The three-term senator from Arizona has earned a reputation as a go-to lawmaker, tackling campaign finance, the war on Iraq, federal spending and climate change.

It's little wonder that his foray into the baseball scandal has revived Republican speculation about McCain and the 2008 presidential race.

Nice to know that standing up against steriods in professional sports is seen as more of a vote-getter than trying to keep our men and women from dying abroad.

I'm starting to think we got just what we deserved in terms of polical leadership in this country.

4. That's so dumb
I hope Jeb runs so that all of McCain's asskissing will have been in vain. I can't wait for the Bushies to backstab him once more.

5. Steroids in baseball, America's most pressing issue
Definitely something this country's politicians need to look into. I'm glad to see the pauperization of American workers, the destruction of the environment and costly imperial adventurism take a backseat to the real issues in our society!

6. More non-issue issues.
Are the politicians aware there's two and a half wars going on with a growing chance of complete economic collapse? I could give two
$#!+$ if they were smoking crack in the bullpen, just do something about our foreign and economic policy, and a little health care relief would be nice.

7. McCain doesn't have a chance.
He's a moderate in a party dominated by neo-conservative corporatists and right-wing christianism zealots. He's kidding himself if he thinks they are going to make way for him in 2008.

8. I don't know
Paired with an ultra-conservative VP, he might get support from the fundamentalist right. As far as centrists go, I can see a few of my socially progressive/economically conservative DLC-type friends voting for McCain. The same people were incidentally lauding a "bi-partisan" Kerry/McCain ticket.

but someone the Bushie's handpick will have priority over McCain. I just don't see him getting support in the primaries.

13. I see your point. But after Dubya, it's kinda hard to imagine.
The Republicans seem to have a thing for "puppet presidents" (i.e. Dubya and Reagan), and McCain has proven that he has a mind of his own. It seems likely that they will either find another puppet in 2008, or else bring in one of the actual "puppet masters" which is what Bush Sr. was, and what Jeb is in the running to be. McCain is a party loyalist to be sure, but he's still not in on the BFEE's inner circle.

14. Doubtful
I hang out on a few overall Conservative boards. If you bring up McCain or even Ron Paul, they dislike them immensly.

You are right, Republclicans like "God-appointed" (e.g. Rove appointed) leaders. McCain is out of the loop and is still look upon as a quasi-traitor if not definite RINO by many Republicans.

15. Interesting
I do hope McCain gets nowhere near the Republican ticket, since I have the feeling he'll take a lot of Democratic votes in the center. Then again, this is three years from now, so who knows what condition the country will be in then or how brazen the right wing will get with their nominations.

The guy is about as reactionary as any Republican Senator. And I think that this story proves his lack of real libertarian cred.

11. By 2008, Jeb won't have to run to get the Republican Party's
nomination. He will be anointed. He shall then be swept into office by a blackbox plebiscite and rule happily for the next eight years.

26. Jeb won't run...
I don't see Jeb running in 2008. America will be ready for a change and another Bush wouldn't be able to get elected. Also, Jeb's wife is a complete liability. She was caught by US customs trying to sneak in some jewels into the country about five years ago. If the media had fun with Mrs Kerry, it will be a field day with Jeb's wife.

29. The bushes don't need to get 'elected'.
America was ready for a change this go round, but they didn't get it. Also, Kerry's wife is a Democrat, that's why the media was on her.

If he does that, he's finished...no way the Republicans will forgive him. They want closed borders...he's much more moderate.

He couldn't buck the machine at such an important time. I think it was sold to him that if he kept quite in 04, 08 would be his.
And he will be much easier sell than shrub! They may not even have to fix the polls.

22. I better not EVER hear this scumbag talk about "small government" again
Federal legislation against steroid use amongst baseball players?

Aside from the sheer irrelevance of the issue, what the hell happened to the free market? If consumers are well-informed and consequently reject baseball players who allegedly use performance-enhancing drugs, the private sector will be forced to address the matter decisively. Trust me.

No wonder Senators don't have time to read any of the bills. They keep coming up with new functions of the federal government. More axes to grind for their vanity causes while the rest of us suffer in our daily lives.

I can see talking about real issues: Healthcare, taxes, the envorinment, helping you run for a 2008 bid, but steroids in baseball??? What the hell does that have to do with the Presidency? Dumbest thing I've heard yet.

The media do love their fluff stories....
