ANCHORAGE, United States (AFP) - Bad weather held up efforts to contain an oil spill in an Alaskan wildlife reserve and more oil gushed from a Malaysian freighter that broke in half in a storm, officials said.
High winds and waves buffeted the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge, complicating efforts to assess damage to the nesting haven for 40 million seabirds and numerous marine mammals, including the endangered Steller sea lion and western Alaska sea otter.
Ten of the original 26 crew of the downed Malaysian-flagged vessel, the Selendang Ayu, arrived Saturday in Dutch Harbor, Alaska, where meetings were planned with US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigators.
The NTSB is investigating the accident and the crash of a Coast Guard helicopter that lost six of the ship's crew shortly after rescuing them.
Petty Officer Cindy Marshall, a Coast Guard spokeswoman, said rescue and recovery effort were on hold early Sunday.
