Senate Votes to Block Overtime Changes
http://abcnews.go.com/wire/Politics/reuters20030910_199.html

A divided U.S. Senate defied a White House veto threat on Wednesday and voted to block proposed federal work rule changes that foes say could cost millions of Americans overtime pay.

The Republican-led chamber approved a Democratic amendment that would derail proposed expansion of overtime exemptions for white-collar workers under the 1938 Fair Labor Standards Act.

Yet the final fate of the administration proposal remains unclear as it still faces a number of procedural and possible legal twists and turns.

He almost never bucks the crowd anymore ... especially now that he's not running for re-election.

14. Thank you Specter
Going to get ugly here in PA with the Repugs running a Wingnut to unseat Specter.

Boy I'm not going to know who to root for. I'm thinking if the Repugs defeat him in the primary if the Dems get a good candidate we could have a Dem Seat in the Senate from PA.

Too bad it's going to be awhile before we can go after Ricky Boy Santorum again.

11. It hasn't gone away yet
There has to be a resolution with the House, which is slightly on Bush's side on this, plus Bush has threatened a veto if he gets a bill that denies the Dept of Labor from going ahead with the rules.

So we don't have to wait until after any election to hear more about this. The Repugs may well want to push it off until then, though, for the reason you mentioned.

15. My guess
Alaska has many oil field workers that make lots of overtime. They are flown up and work extensive hours and then fly back home.

28. Tourism as well
There is a fairly large tourism industry in Alaska (mainly from Cruise Ships), and a lot of the people who work in the industry make overtime pay.

Plus, you have to keep in mind that the Alaska Senators are not neocons. I don't particularly care for Stevens or Murkowski since they are Repubs, but at least they are of the old time conservative ideology rather than being completely sold out to private interests.

29. Most of Alaska's state revenue comes from oil
A friend from Alaska told me the other day that Alaskans pay no state income tax because of oil revenues and that every man, woman and child gets a check from oil claims of up to $1400. And I thought Texas was controlled by oil.

34. Some truth to that and some not so true
Alaska is a large oil producing state and yes we do not pay state income tax (yet). However the dividend check that all alaskans receive is derived from a Permanent Fund. (A bank account) Granted this Permanent Fund had it's origin from Oil Royalties it is now standing on it's own feet. The interest from this Fund (twenty-four billion dollars) and monies made from investments from this fund are what's used to sned out Dividend checks. The rational behind all of this came from it being Alaska resources and belonged to all Alaskans so should benefit all Alaskans. The Fund itself is never touched and in fact is added to every year so it just keeps getting larger and larger. If you stop to think about it, it is pretty good economic policy. Every October every single Alaskan gets a check which they immediatley put back into the state economy. October which is normally a month of decline in revenues in most states is a boon to Alaskan business and individuals alike. Instead of crying about how good Alaskans have it why don't you ask your own legislators why you don't have something similiar? In fact all of America should be demanding the same treatment as Alaska provides for it's citizens.

16. One of the major groups targeted by this Overtime is Nurses!
The One profession with the Major shortages and Nurse work extra shifts to cover the shortages! I can guarantee Nurses are not going to cover these shifts without overtime!

So this is ridiculous! :bounce:

I received some stuff at work in my mail box from them about this. There is also an article that somebody put up in the breakroom that was put out by the ANA about this. It said call your senator. It very nicely avoided calling Bush the perpatrator.

26. Yeap....and they will have hell to pay if this gets screwed
up in some Committee stuff.....which I'm not sure what all that may be....I just realized it ain't over yet.....

We will never, ever, ever work OT without the cash. They will have to pay agency nurses to do it and for more than what our OT is. Plus, the agency nurses are not staff and don't focus on the "unit" as a regular nurse does.... They are quite skilled, thats not the issue but maintaining the daily structure is not possible with a new "fill in the blank" nurse every shift...... Oh, I could go on....

43. It could be in trouble
I'm not sure if the senate has passed the final appropriations bill yet but the house has and the senate probably will very soon if it hasn't done so already.

Then, the house and senate bills have to go into conference committee to create a comprimise. The house narrowly voted to uphold the overtime rules so there is a difference there between the house and senate bills. The republicans control the conference committee however Republicans Ted Stevens and Arlen Specter will probably both be on the conference committee because they are the chair of the full committee and Labor HHS subcommittee respectiviely and they are two republicans who opposed Bush's changes. Therefore, they may very well side with the democrats on the conference committee and demand that the overtime rules be overturned. But, the house will probably battle the senate very hard. So, it is difficult to see how that will turn out. If it the Harkin Amendment survives the conference and is passed then Bush will probably veto it and then who knows what will happen in Congress.

31. Ah, the weakened forces of the dying Old Republic stir
Though it may not mean anything regarding the functionality of the Imperial Senate in the long-run (and perhaps a couple more convenitent small plane crashes), it does my heart good to see the few remaining signs that the Old Republic is not dead.

But the Bushevik strategy has been and continues to be the "floodgate" approach, or the Trotskyite notion of "perpetual revolution".
