WA: Councilman's ballot among those rejected
Councilman's ballot among those rejected

By Jennifer Sullivan
Seattle Times staff reporter

Monday, December 13, 2004 - Page updated at 12:42 A.M.

When King County Councilman Larry Phillips scanned a list of his
Seattle constituents whose gubernatorial votes had been rejected, his
eyes froze. There, buried in the list, was his own name.

After making the discovery yesterday, Phillips called King County
Elections Director Dean Logan and demanded an explanation.

"I was under the absolute impression not only I voted, but
followed the instructions correctly," said Phillips, a Democrat. "If
it can happen to the King County Council chairman, it can happen to
anyone else."

Logan said it appears Phillips' absentee ballot was rejected because
his signature isn't on file with the county elections office.
Phillips, who voted absentee because he was in Ohio campaigning for
presidential candidate John Kerry, thought there might have been a
mix-up because he doesn't normally vote absentee.

1. Whoops. Missed a spot...
You can't defraud the elected officials and people in the know without blowing your cover. Guess that the fraud bug now moves to the Pacific Northwest. Just one more testament to how slimy and arrogant the GOP is these days.

2. How can his signature not be on file?????
If he registered to vote the signature would be needed to be valid.

8. My thoughts exactly.
When you register to vote in WA, your signature goes on file. If you change to absentee, your signature gets updated. There's no way to register to vote without getting your signature, therefore someone in the elections office screwed up.

9. Letter I sent to paper
Recently it was reported that absentee ballots were rejected because the voter's signature was not on file with the county elections office. That excuse does not make sense. How does a registered voter not have their signature on file? The state of Washington requires the signature and date in box 9 on the voter registration form.

I have had to registered to vote three times in two different states and each time I needed to sign my name. In Indiana if any part of the voter registration form is not filled out the office attempts to contact the individual so that it can be corrected. I am sure county elections offices in Washington follow that procedure too.

As for State Republican Party Chair Chris Vance statement "The Democrats are asking for far more than counting a few ballots that were missing the first time. They want them to look at every ballot that was rejected the first time. It would destroy the election process." Why is it that Republicans are always trying to prevent the votes from being counted? If the election process means winning an election by not counting all legal votes or other dishonest means than I am all for destroying it. What would be the point of voting if the Republicans steal elections?

3. The state repub chair said:
State Republican Party Chairman Chris Vance responded: "The Democrats are asking for far more than counting a few ballots that were missed the first time. They want them to look at every ballot that was rejected the first time. It would destroy our election process."

Not our process, pal.

7. I guess checking to verify that your signature on file wasn't deleted ...
is un-American and a waste of taxpayer dollars, eh?
