NY Times: Bush Nominates E.P.A. Chief as Health Secretary
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Published: December 13, 2004

Filed at 10:42 a.m. ET

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush chose Environmental Protection Agency chief Michael Leavitt on Monday to be secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, filling one of the last two openings in his second term Cabinet.

Bush praised hm as a ``fine executive'' and ``a man of great compassion.'' ``He's an ideal choice to lead one of the largest of the United States government.''

Leavitt, Utah's governor before joining the Bush administration in late 2003, would succeed Tommy Thompson, who recently resigned.

Bush also has to name a new head of the Homeland Security Department to take the place of Bernard Kerik, who abruptly withdrew his nomination Friday night, citing immigration problems with a family housekeeper.

1. Probably timed to move the conversation away from Kerik
Oh wait, Karl Rove calls the shots. Delete the word "probably".

5. does bush ever tie previous experience, training, education to cabinet

positions?
Condoleezzaa Rise is unqualified for either of her two posiitons.
Colin Powell might have done better in Rumsfeld's post.
Rumsfeld never went to the army nor to war (so i've heard).
Kerik was a goon but that's about the only thing he had going for the nomination of his post. Why doesn't he import someone who worked under Putin in Putin's previous job--they'll fit the billfor homeland security.
And... compassion and administrative experience... that and knowing how to sell pastry will qualify anyone to fly an airplane!!!!
what is with bush..he is not only out to destroy iraq, in a very different way, he is destroying our own united states!

6. Leavitt's background is in the insurance industry

Leavitt, a father of five and devout Mormon, moved to Washington in the past year with his wife, Jacalyn, and a son in high school. Before becoming governor, he was chief operating officer of the Leavitt Group, an insurance firm.
