Bush making 9/11 pitch for new laws
http://www.msnbc.com/news/964322.asp?0cv=CB10

On the eve of the second anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, President Bush on Wednesday embarks on two days of events that include a pitch for tougher antiterrorism laws and a progress report on America’s domestic security. His first stop: a trip Wednesday afternoon to the FBI Academy in Quantico, Va., where the president will brief local emergency workers and federal officials on security efforts.

THE PRESIDENT was expected to use his FBI briefing to lobby for more law enforcement power to go after terrorists, arguing that there are disparities in the law that make no sense.

For example, suspected drug traffickers are presumptively denied bail in some cases but those provisions don’t apply to suspected terrorists, the administration argues. Similarly, provisions for administrative subpoenas that are available in medical fraud cases and many other instances do not apply to terrorism, officials said.

Many of the provisions that Bush is seeking are contained in proposals already introduced in Congress, and they go beyond provisions in the Patriot Act, the law passed a month after the Sept. 11., 2001, attacks.

1. Shrewd argument brewing
1) Punishment for crime A is 100 and for B is 200. It doesn't make sense.
2) In reaction to (1), punishment for crime A is increased to 300.
3) Punishment for crime A is 300 and for B is 200. It doesn't make sense.
4) In reaction to (3), punishment for crime B is increased to 400.
5) Go to (1)

3. They're not even talking about "punishment for crime" ...
Edited on Wed Sep-10-03 11:06 AM by TahitiNut
They're talking about punishment for being accused of intending a crime, even before committing an actual crime!! :puke:

By the way ... who else sees the abysmal hypocrisy of raping the criminal statutes for acts which are called "acts of war"???

2. We ARE next!
Bush and Asscroft, as they have all along, are going to use any expansion of terrorism laws, to target their political opposition. "Terrorism", is the same smokescreen he's used to justify all of the rest of his fascist behaviour, including using the word 27 times in his last speech. Milk it. Milk it good. We've got to get this fascist bastard out of there quick, or we won't have a Constitution left!

4. Also on 9/11 he will visit wounded from Iraq at Walter Reed
Further cementing the connection for many.

The next day, the president takes part in a series of sober appearances: a prayer service at a nearby church, a moment of silence on the White House’s South Lawn at the hour of the first plane’s crash into the World Trade Center towers in New York, and a visit with U.S. soldiers recovering at Walter Reed Army Medical Hospital from wounds suffered in Iraq.

5. but, I thought the terrorists are all in Iraq now...?
Mr Bush confuses me with his sharp intellect...

why do they need more subpoena power, when they can do secret searches without a warrant, and pull anyone off the streets based on the word of GWB and nothing else?

Why do they need to deny bail to suspects that they can already lock up indefinitely?

Why am I afraid to even ask these questions?
