Explosion rocks Baghdad, smoke near Green Zone

BAGHDAD, Dec 14 (Reuters) - A loud explosion rattled central Baghdad on Tuesday and a cloud of smoke could be seen rising close the Green Zone government and diplomatic compound.

A day earlier, a suicide car bomber killed at least seven Iraqis at an entrance to the complex.

BAGHDAD, Dec 14 (Reuters) - A suicide car bomber struck at an entrance to Baghdad's Green Zone government compound on Tuesday, 24 hours after an almost identical attack on the same checkpoint, a U.S. military spokesman and Iraqi police said.

"There's been a VBIED (car bomb) at Checkpoint 12," the spokesman said, adding that, as was the case on Monday, there had been no U.S. casualties.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - A suicide car bomber killed seven people when he struck a checkpoint at Baghdad's Green Zone early Tuesday, the second attack in two days at the district that houses Iraq's interim government and foreign embassies, officials said.

At least 13 people were injured in the blast, said Dr. Hassan AbdelSatar from Baghdad's Yarmouk Hospital.

On Monday, a suicide bomber killed 13 and injured 15 people near the Harthiyah gate on the western edge of zone.

Police Lt. Rafid Abid confirmed that Tuesday's attack also was carried out by a suicide bomber.
