25. She'd better stay away from small airplanes
She and a few others got him good in a Senate hearing before the war when they stood up holding signs asking to let the weapons inspectors finish their job in Iraq.

It was GREAT. Made a lot of civilized noise, held up their previously rolled up signs, then quietly left with the guards.

85. TRANSCRIPT of the comment in question
I also posted this in the GD thread asking the same question.

The quote came shortly after the protestors, and should give us a whole lot to chew over...

Per my Tivo:

Interestingly, about a month or two after September 11, I was in Oman, meeting with the Sultan of Oman in a tent, south of his country, he was was visiting his constituents.

He said, you know, as terrible as September 11th was, it may very well be that it was a blessing in disguise. I said, how so? And he said it was terrible, the loss of 3,000 human beings, but if it will awake the world, if it will cause us to act, if it will cause people to stop people from teaching (that) it is a good thing to kill innocent men, women and children. If that were to happen before we had a September 11, where not 3,000 people were killed, but 30,000, or 300,000, through a biological attack or whatever, he said, then it would have served a useful purpose.

That is, in a very important sense, a task we have, a responsibility we have to do everything we can as people to see that we don't have an event of that magnitude. The global war is not a war we fight so we can declare victory and go home, really. The world was changed on September 11, and if we're going to be able to live as free people and say what we want and go where we wish and send our children off to school knowing they'll be able to come home, not be terrorized, not alter the way we live our lives, then we have to recognize that we have to change, that we have to deal with these new threats in different ways."

93. He was quoting somebody
He is still a worm, but he was quoting somebody. Before we start acting like a bunch of Rush Limbaughs and Ann Coulters here, he was quoting somebody. Rumsfeld is still a worm, he is even a fucking worm for that matter, but he was quoting sombody else. It was a blessing because it woke the world up before 30K or 300K died in a terrorist attack.

I am not defending Rumsfeld here, but let us not act like the thing we hate. In case that is not understood, Donald Rumsfeld is a waste of sperm. Attributing that quote to him is wrong.

Even an utter bastard like Bush should demand his immediate resignation.

67. More fuzzy math
Didn't they learn anything after the "average" tax cut B.S. was shown for the propaganda it was?

What are the real numbers? How many countries in the coalition, and what are their contributions (doctors, aid, letter of support, etc.)?

How many COMBAT troops, and what's the average outside of the U.K., Australia (think they're gone now), Poland, Spain -- the only ones I'm aware of with more than a handful of troops.

Also, are they averaging troops by dividing the total by ALL countries in the coalition, or by those THAT ARE SENDING PEOPLE? If the former, even countries writing a letter of support are getting credit for sending troops -- sheer obfuscation, I would say, to make it look as if lots of countries are willing to sacrifice their own citizens for our stupid war.

There's also more discussion in GD, here:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=312476#312492

Here's what I posted in GD:

A woman on the balcony just screamed:

"Rumsfeld, you're FIRED!!!!"

"Your foreign policy is based on lies. The war in Iraq is unjust, illegal and the occupation is immoral! There are US Soldiers dying in Iraq every day! Bring the troops home now! Tell us when the troops are coming home!

Hey Rumsfeld, what do you say! How many children did you kill today! Hey Rumsfeld, what do you say! How many soldiers did you kill today!"

There were two women, holding a banner that read "BLOODY HANDS."

Damn, watching that just gave me chills. The tide is turning, my friends.

Since so many microphones were present in the National Press Club room, her words were clearly heard by all.

35. The natives are definitely getting restless
Look at the protests of Ashcroft and Bush wherever they go and a renewed call to demonstrate against the war. I'm afraid this is only going to get worse before it gets better. This government is at war with its own people.

74. Surely The Vast Majority Of These 115k Prisoners Who Were Freed...
were imprisoned unjustly from the beginning. After all Saddam was a brutal dictator prone to locking up children and whole families. We should be happy that they are free.;-)

The UN demanded that Iraq release all political prisoners....and so they did. Rummy probably just forgot. With his record for honesty,..........<gack>

48. First question, what mistakes were made in the war?
Soft ball if there were ever were one. Rummy is going on about what a great war it has been.

Now Rummy complaining about the criminals being released from jail in Iraq before the US came in. I thought they were liberated?

102. The death of logic
So the PNACers now believe they will let fly the concept that liberated prisoners are responsible for the death of Americans?

How convenient.

Usually they test these lies at a lower level.

Edited on Wed Sep-10-03 12:47 PM by Old and In the Way
no comment, country has great deal of potential.

Governments can do really little for the people...let big business control that oil.....that must be the case in Iraq.

Boy, isn't this going to be interesting.....the basis of a real debate.

Cost of War? I don't know....30 years of Stalinist control...bullshit, they had the most progressive society in the ME until we declared DS1 on them.

81. When I heard the heckling
Rumsfeld was talking about 9/11, terrorism, 9/11, a different world now....9/11 ...blah blah blah.....I was so hoping the heckler would say, "Stop exploiting 9/11 for your own agenda!'....this would have had a great impact on his continuing his remarks along in that vien.

I tell you, I'm getting really jaded over the invoking of 9/11 to further their agenda. It has become this administraion's carte blanche to getting whatever the hell it wants!

89. Thanks for the video link.
It's intense. They make their presence known near the first, after the female blowhard makes you think you're going to go insane trying to block out her servile bowing and scraping, just as he gets up to begin his horrendous lying.

Some man bellows "sit down," and "go home." They got their licks in, however.

Hope to hear more about this on tonight's news.

90. The protestors are getting MAJOR media coverage!!!
Wolf Blitzer just showed the entire clip of the protestors on CNN, and even included them being dragged away.

They also included Rumsfeld's response about how free speech now exists in Iraq, thanks to the Administration's efforts.

How nice to know that free speech exists in Iraq, but not in the United States. Anyone feel safer?

(after watching the video of the protest) was how cold-blooded Rummy really is.

He KNOWS that his neocon friends hijacked the 9/11 experience for their own agenda, and it didn't bother him at all. he stayed perfectly on message.

101. exciting stuff.
Henry Kissinger once said that Rumsfeld "is the coldest man I have ever known". I believe the man is absolutely devoid of emotions. And he even writes poetry. Interesting.

I know that he also owns 6 houses somewhere in Texas. Before the war in Iraq, war protesters plastered one of his homes with baby clothes soaked in red paint to demonstrated that children were about to die.

I read that he was extremely unnerved that people found out where his houses were located, and that they had trespassed.

VERY STRANGE GUY
