Iran faces nuke deadline
10.09.2003 - 12:30
By Louis Charbonneau

VIENNA (Reuters) - The United States and four allies are pushing the U.N. nuclear watchdog to approve a resolution that
will give Tehran until October 31 to prove it has no covert nuclear weapons programme.

Japan, Britain, France and Germany joined forces with Washington by co-sponsoring a draft that demanded Iran
demonstrate full compliance with the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which the United States says Tehran has
violated.

The toughly-worded draft resolution, circulated at a closed-door meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA)
35-nation Board of Governors, also called on Iran to "suspend all further uranium enrichment activities".

5. Once again asking someone to prove a negative
and nobody calls them on it. Oh, and treaties are for suckers like Iran, not for the US. :grr:

Iran's Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi went a step further and told the IRNA news agency in Tehran that Iran would be forced to reconsider cooperation with the U.N. nuclear watchdog if it was denied the right to a peaceful nuclear programme.

"If the hawks gain the ground and ignore our legitimate rights for peaceful nuclear activities, we will be forced to review the
state of play and the current level of cooperation with the agency," Kharrazi said.

A Western diplomat told Reuters that this kind of comment from Tehran was "blackmail".

The U.S.-backed resolution also calls on Iran "to promptly and unconditionally sign, ratify and fully implement" an NPT
Additional Protocol granting the IAEA the right to carry out more intrusive snap inspections of its nuclear programme.
