Cheney Asked to Skip Main 9-11 Ceremony

NEW YORK - Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Wednesday he asked Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites) not to attend the city's World Trade Center anniversary ceremony because Cheney's security would have "inconvenienced" family members of victims.

"Because of concerns that the increased security measures required for vice presidential travel would have inconvenienced or delayed family members, I have asked Vice President Cheney to attend a memorial service later in the day honoring fallen Port Authority officers and employees, instead of the morning's commemoration at the World Trade Center site," Bloomberg said in a statement.

Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura was there along with Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson. The former governor of neighboring Wisconsin, Thompson represented the White House at the memorial after the administration's first choice, Vice President Dick Cheney, was asked not to come.

and they used the same "asked not come because of the security problems it would cause" blah, blah, blah.

Though, the word around here was that that the Wellstone sons did not want him there.

The other story was that Cheney decided facing 20,000 grieving liberals was not a good idea and he chickened out. I was not one of those who booed Trent Lott (though I was sorely tempted) I don't think I could have restrained myself if I had seen Cheney's ugly mug on the jumbotron.

5. When I first heard Cheney was going to NYC instead of Dubya, I thought

I heard a policman from NYC on NPR a few weeks ago. A young man in his thirties who had been the picture of health. Now he has a respirator and can barely walk w/o the use of a cane.

Will Bloomberg be able to keep all the protestors fenced into "first amendment zones" on the other side of the city, so that His Highness does not need to see them?
