Bush Asks To Extend State Of Emergency For Another Yr
(sorry -- no link yet)

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--President George W. Bush has notified Congress of his
intention to extend by another year the state of emergency in place in the U.S.
since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, MSNBC reported Wednesday.
MSNBC, quoting a White House statement, said the extension is being made due
to the continued threat of terrorism.
The state of emergency, among other things, allows the President to call up
military reserves.

The “among other things” is quite discomforting…IMHO

5. They plan to stop the 2004 election.
They know they can't win in a fair fight, so they're going to cancel the election on the grounds that it would "rock the boat" in a time of crisis. Not sure what they'll do with Bush's $200M; probably split it among the largest contributors.

17. This country held elections during the civil war,

and during WWII.

There would be no viable excuse to halt elections today.

elections during wartime invariably wind up returning the incumbent for another term....

6. There may be more to this than appears on the surface
I believe the government, while in a "state of emergency" has certain powers.

The Repugs were upset that Clinton presdided over a "state of emergency" that had been going on for decades IIRC.

they'll use the SOM status to shut down the counter-convention and other asorted protests and demonstrations that will rock NYC next September.

9. What emergency?
Has something happened in the two years since 9/11 that I'm not aware of that would constitute an emergency within the United States? I sure cannot think of anything outside of Bush himself.

10. If Congress had a brain among them
they would say NO. Something like this SURELY requires a supermajority (not that a silly rule like that would deter the reppups)

You KNOW Byrd will have to harness his tongue. This would be the way for Congress to take back control of Iraq.
