Conservative Christians Call For Boycott Of Gay TV Sponsors
http://www.365gay.com/NewsContent/091003tvAds.htm

This may have been the breakthrough year for the number of gay shows and themes on television, but it has all been too much for a conservative Christian action group.

The Montana Family Coalition is organizing a political action campaign targeting the sponsors of gay oriented shows. The Coalition, which used to be known as the Montana Christian Coalition, is specifically targeting the Bravo hit series Queer Eye For The Straight Guy, but says it intends to add more to the list, including Boy Meets Boy, Will and Grace and others.

1. Oh, thank christ!

So long, suckers! Boycott! No one will know you're gone. Run along, now. Spend your money with folks who rape the environment and enslave workers. Go! And take your dogs and your fleas with you!

3. *&$#! those jerks
Giving "Montana" and "Family" (hell, and "Coalition") a bad name...

That comment from Julie on what a "real" gay reality show would be really burns me up. Thanks for the post. Hope I meet Julie in person some day

4. Maybe we need a list of those sponsors
so we'll know whom to buy from. One very prominent sponsor of "Queer Eye For the Straight Guy" is Amaretto di Saronno.

I'll be watching the rerun of "Queer Eye" this evening on Bravo, so I can write down the sponsors.

Julie

8. I'm sure these narrow-minded fools
Are not big drinkers of Amaretto di Saronno. I could be wrong, but I doubt it. ;-)

I just can't imagine any such boycott hurting these businesses all that much.

13. I am!
I already do that by noting sponsors of insipid shows, mostly on PAX, but also on Comedy Central for God's sake. However, it's much better to organize.

What do you suggest? I need help on this one!

P.S. Is it okay that you'll have a Jew or several with you liberal Christians?

31. Scarborough Country
We should boycott all advertisers who spend money supporting right-wing radio shows, right-wing tv shows. Not those that have real political debate, but those that peddle unbalanced propoganda and disguise it as "news". Seriously - we should hit them where it hurts - we all want good honest debate on TV: at the moment, we just don't get any.

The link also includes the phone number for Montana Family Coalition. It's not toll free but the current voice message just so happens to have that Julie bitch's cell phone number on it.

Not that I would suggest anyone call her and tell her what an asshole she is.

Now I would NEVER do that!

10. MY family specifically targets "Queer Eye" - for watching EVERY week!
It's our new favorite show!

I think if these so-called Christians tried to live by the words of Jesus, maybe they'd try to love one another a little more, especially those Christ referred to as "the least of my brethren." NOT THAT I'M DECLARING GAYS TO BE THAT!!! NO WAY!!! But I bet the "christians" do.

12. Yeah, well...
Montana, eh? Not many people to begin with.

After you eliminate the gays, liberals, and people who don't give a shit one way or the other, they'll get a whole dozen on their boycott of things no one out there buys anyway.

I did note that their website says they are dedicated to, among other things-- "the Freedom to Express our Faith"

They don't have freedom to express their faith?

What about everyone else's freedom to express their faiths? Or lack of them?

Their "god" is the most narrow-minded, prejudiced asshole I've ever seen. Their "god" doesn't exist, only in the minds of these very bigoted people--not just this small group, but every fricking so-called Xtian who has ever harbored a thought of hatred toward anyone.

who is that nasty person holding a gun to your heads and forcing you to order cable, pay for it monthly and watch "Queer Eye"?

Sheesh, you people have already made network TV blander than Wonder Bread...leave my fucking cable alone!!!

Oh yeah, that comment in the article by Julie, your Cruise Director of Hate, speaks volumes about the alleged Christianity of nutjob cabals like this one.

22. Why can't gay men be shown as regular people?
OK...I am a flamy color coordinating gay guy. At the same time, to see show after show after show reinforcing the fact that gay= effeminate, superficial, sex-crazed, etc. While I fit stereotypes, I need go no further than my own partner to show that gays are not all sterotypes. Such shows have forced me, though, to put on other peoples shoes and walk around in them for a while.

I think I have gotten an inkling of how it feels when African Americans are portrayed as fried chicken and watermelon eating tapdancers, Italians are portrayed as greasy pasta eaters, and Asian women are portrayed as giggling ditzes who do not know a word of English. First it makes me feel embarrassed about myself and self conscious. Then it makes me angry that people have the audacity to reduce people to trifles.

For instance, I used to watch Queer As Folk. Then I realized that the plot was always the same. Sex, minute long relationships, drugs, clubs, bitchiness, superficiality. The characters are simply archetypes that don't really match up to any real people.

23. I'm a straight, african-american woman and I understand your mixed
feelings. But I think the producers (a straight man and a gay man) took a tongue-in-cheek approach to the stereotypes and put a twist on it: Gay men helping straight men improve their relationships with women. The Fab 5 may be stereotypical in terms of occupation, but they are hardly one-dimensional cartoon characters -- their personalities show through and you start to see them as individuals.

I never miss Queer Eye -- and Ted Allen is a cutie. :loveya:

24. I worry...
About how stereotypes are dealt with in the media. But, overall I think a light hearted look at stereotypes actually goes a long, long way to help society to breath easy and relax a little bit - not be so uptight about thigns. Sometimes I'm kind of greatful when a show comes along, under the direction of a gay individual, that tastefully pokes a little fun at gay stereotypes -- I think its good for people to get to laughing and let some of their fears (aka homophobia) and tensions wash away.

I could be wrong about all of that... all I know is I love Will and Grace, no matter what that says about me - good or bad. :D

By the way, as a person who has a passionate faith, a spiritual experience that gives me great joy, I sincerely apologize for the hurt and hate spread around by groups mentioned in the original article. And to my gay brothers and sisters, I affirm you and esteem you as fine, fine human beings - blessings upon you and yours. :)

Edited on Fri Sep-12-03 03:10 PM by cherryperry
I'm a straight, JEWISH woman who completely understands mixed feelings: I just cringe when I see how Jews are usually portrayed (and not just on t.v.)

AND

I have a crush on THREE of them (but I can't remember their names)!!!

P.S. I think their next assignment is to re-do straight females and I want to be first ... you want to be next or you can be first and I'll be second? LOL

25. I'm really fired up about this
I just sent this email to the Montana group:

I am a straight woman, and I will oppose your efforts to shove your views down everyone else's throats. You do not have to watch Queer Eye (I don't watch The 700 Club, but I wouldn't try to get them thrown off the air).

I note on your website that you are campaigning for freedom of religious expression. In what ways are you hampered? Are you barred from going to church? Are you barred from praying in your church or in your home?

To go further: Many Christian holidays are national holidays. References to the Christian God is on our currency. How much recognition/control do you need?

33. These people are threatened by cable shows????
Edited on Thu Sep-11-03 06:16 PM by EFF BrandyWine
I have a solution for them: DON'T WATCH THE SHOWS YOU IDIOTS!!! And now, a word from our sponsor.

BTW: I think "Queer eye" is a wonderful show. People doing good stuff for other people and enjoying themselves at the same time. Too bad the anal retentives in Montana can't appreciate that.

On edit: This inhuman being, Julie, who apparently hankers in her bitter little heart for the death of human beings who have never done anything to her, should be aware that there is a special place in Hell for people with that attitude. It involves having the skin flayed off every hour, replaced every other hour and flayed once again, and again and again. Messrs Fallwell and Robertson will soon be joining the adventure as BBQ basters, while being submerged in Merde up to the nipples!

What she said is so offensive that I offer up a prayer to God on behalf of this spiritless imitation of a person. Asking that she become enlightened before the end.
