(Ottawa's) Federal surplus swells to $9 billion
Edited on Thu Dec-16-04 06:35 PM by sonicx
OTTAWA (CP) - The federal surplus swelled to $9 billion in just the first seven months of the current fiscal year, thanks to a windfall from Ottawa's sale of its stake in Petro-Canada.

The latest figures from the federal Finance Department show that from April to October, the government took in $9 billion more than it spent - dramatically larger than the $5.8-billion surplus reported during the same period a year ago.

This year's surplus was swollen by the one-time results from the sale of the federal government's final holdings in the former Crown corporation.

That added $2.6 billion to Ottawa's coffers in September, said the Finance Department.

3. Sure, a surplus is great, but I regret Canada no longer has
a publically-owned petroleum company. Especially now.

A majority stake in Petro Canada was sold by the Conservatives more than 10 years ago, so its strategic value was already lost.

4. With NAFTA, it makes sense. NAFTA gives the US the 'right' to take
Canadian oil and other energy resources in the time of a crunch.

Good ol' NAFTA. :eyes:

6. It's so wonderful to feel "needed".
They could use me and my only son.

I've lots to offer in terms of worldly experience and vast education. My pubescent son is an amazingly adaptable and pro-humanitarian essence.

But, of course,...we live reality,...thrive off dreams,...as we must.
