WASHINGTON - U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan (news - web sites), fending off Republican demands for his resignation over alleged corruption, said Thursday he will expand U.N. support for Iraqi elections if need be. He said he was not offended that President Bush (news - web sites) did not ask to see him during this visit to Washington.

The allegations of abuse in a U.N. oil and aid program hung over Annan as he made his rounds visiting outgoing Secretary of State Colin Powell (news - web sites) and Powell's nominated replacement, White House national security adviser Condoleezza Rice (news - web sites).

Both U.S. diplomats, along with Iraq (news - web sites)'s interim government, have lobbied the United Nations (news - web sites) to do more to help carry off the elections scheduled for Jan. 30.

Annan addressed the subject at the start of a speech on reforming the world body.

2. Explain?
What? The witch hunt for Kofi Annan by the neocons? Bush shunned him, wouldn't see him while Annan was in Washington, you know, being the NON-diplomat that he is..

5. Maybe this is what they were after?
They're hot to trot to be able to say that Iraq is truly a "democracy." It's going to be a huge PR thing, although I'm sure that they enjoyed bitching at/about the UN at the same time.

3. does the administration really WANT anyone's help?
seems to me they'd prefer their sham election to be held away from prying eyes. wouldn't want observers to see what a joke it truly will be.

4. Don't Do It Kofi!
Bush does not reciprocate!

If you give in here, Bush will ask for more next week.

You cannot negotiate with these people.

10. Oil for Food propoganda
Harper's December issue has a great article by Joy Gordon rebutting the propoganda that Bu$hco is spewing about this. A must read.
