U.N. Says Bugging Device Found at Its Geneva HQ

"GENEVA (Reuters) - The United Nations (news - web sites) said on Thursday a secret listening device had been found in a posh meeting room of its European headquarters in Geneva.

The room was used by ministers from major powers last year during private talks on Iraq (news - web sites) following the U.S. invasion and occupation. "

"Marie Heuze, chief U.N. spokeswoman in Geneva, confirmed the report by French-language Swiss Television which said the sophisticated bugging device had been uncovered in recent months in the Salon Francais of the Palais des Nations, formerly the League of Nations.

"I confirm that U.N. workmen found a listening device. An inquiry was unable to determine when the device was planted or by whom," she told Reuters."

5. I see nothing that incriminates the US. I also see this isn't really news.

There are a couple of teeny tiny paragraphs that talk about the bug, of which they have no solid information about, and then a lot of pointless prattle about this grandiose meeting room itself.

This is news?! It's a tidbit mixed in with a bloody promotional pitch. Are they going to rent the room for $200 a night?

It's also stupid, even though it's fun, to blindly point fingers at America. Witness the final tidbit of relevant information in the article: The foreign ministers of the United States, Russia, China, Britain and France met at the United Nations in Geneva in September 2003 for talks on Iraq. If you ask me, we've got 5 guesses. 6 if you count somebody in Geneva, but that's stretching things a bit...

Then there's some seemingly finger-pointing and utterly unprofessional unjournalistic spin by their addition of this: One delegation, probably France's, is believed to have used the Salon Francais -- also used last January during talks on global hunger organized by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and French President Jacques Chirac. Gee, the French - who'd have thunk it? I wouldn't have, they seem to be the most noble of the 5 countries who used that room that day. And there's a several month gulf between January and September.

Edit: Grammar

6. Paul Harvey made sure to mention that it was probably Russian made
I just happened to run into that old crusty show of irrlevance this morning.

I noticed that when Fox reported on bugging ElBaradei they had full conversations about it and never let the minions think there was anything at all wrong with bugging. The discussions were purely about how ElBaradei tried to influence the US elections by daring to "leak" the truth.
