Concerns raised over school privacy notice

Sybil Arum's eighth-grade granddaughter came home this week worried that she was on the verge of being drafted by the military and sent off to war.

The reason for her fear was the Department of Education's annual privacy notice, which says contact information for secondary students as young as sixth-graders may be released to military recruiters unless the student, parent or legal guardian requests otherwise.

2. public schools must release info to recruiters or lose funding
It's part of that WONDERFUL No Child Left Behind Act.

more from the article:
"The release of information is part of the federal No Child Left Behind Act, which requires all school systems receiving NCLB money to make the contact information available to military recruiters or risk losing federal money. The law also requires schools to give military recruiters the same on-campus access they would give to prospective employers, colleges and other post-secondary education institutions."

You know, I think we're going to be ok. All the shit that the Right Wing Nuts have wrought is coming home to roost.

I wish awareness would come faster. I wish all of this had never happened. But we are seeing the unraveling of Rove's compact against America.

4. That's right, no child left behind by the military.
Don't ya just love it? It was a perfect way to exploit school enrollment lists.

5. I knew
it was part of NCLB but I didn't know it could apply all the way down to Sixth Grade. Do people READ legislation before they vote on it!? Yeah I know they're busy but damn man somebody on staff needs to read this crap and tell these people that the bill sucks and they should vote no. There's got to be a better way to do business in Congress.

3. The trouble with opting out....
Is that the school can't give your child's info out to ANYONE--including colleges. So your student won't get invitations to attend the choice schools unless you also let the miltiary recruiters have at 'em.
