Ten Commandments Judge May Run for Gov. (Roy Moore)
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Ousted Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore said Friday he is considering running for governor in 2006.

"I'll be praying about it and considering it," told reporters.

Moore was ousted in November 2003 for defying a federal judge's order to remove his 5,280-pound Ten Commandments monument from public display in the state judicial building. He appealed his ouster to the U.S. Supreme Court (news - web sites), but lost.

If Moore were to run as a Republican, he could face a GOP primary battle with Gov. Bob Riley, who has not yet said whether he will seek a second term.

Moore and Riley stood together on the Ten Commandments issue last year until Moore refused to abide by the federal judge's order. Riley said a public official must respect a court order. The monument was removed

This is not good at all for those of us who live in Alabama.

5. Yes, he will.
People think he's some kind of freak or clown, but he polled more than 800,000 votes in a statewide race to become chief justice.

When he speaks around the country it's to packed houses. He's the rock star of the religious right.

14. It's not a done deal
While the conventional wisdom is that Moore would be unbeatable, there are some surveys that dispute that. Many Alabamians who are pious and fundamental have grown tired of Moore's grandstanding. As quaoar has posted, though, Lucy Baxley is the most prominent Democrat at this point, her record isn't particularly dynamic, and these same pious and fundamental citizens might not vote for a woman.

We live in interesting times.

7. The Democratic nominee
is likely to be Lt. Gov. Lucy Baxley.

But I just don't see her beating Moore. Riley could beat him in a straight up vote of the entire electorate because Democrats would back him, but not in the GOP primary.

8. You'll have to "split the vote"
Hell, let him win the Repug primary.

And then pose as a fundie yourself even FARTHER to the right, and run against him as an independent. "I promise to outlaw all abortions, add bible classes to every public school, and begin each school day by reading The Lord's Prayer."

Split the far-right godwhack vote so the Dems win.

But then what do you do if you win? Well, how many politicians keep their promises anyway?

11. I don't think he can beat Lucy
Hell, even down here everyone thinks Lucy will be the next gov, even if Moore runs. Most of the Reps I know are moderates and they consider him an embarassment. I don't see this part of the state's party allowing Moore to get very far, and these are the people with the money.

29. Unless the rules have changed recently, you don't have to
change your registration. You just ask for the Republican primary ballot. Crossover voting is allowed.

10. The people of Alabama will elect him in a second.
Alabama's citizens are very upset that Bob Riley raised their taxes and I think, in a primary, it would not even be close.

33. THEY COULD BREAK OUT THE FIRE HOSES IN BIRMINGHAM

Birmingham 1963

For years, Birmingham, Ala., was considered “the South’s toughest city,” home to a large black population and a dominant class of whites that met in frequent, open hostility. Birmingham in 1963 had become the cause célèbre of the black civil rights movement as nonviolent demonstrators led by Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. repeatedly faced jail, dogs and high-velocity hoses in their tireless quest to topple segregation. This picture of people being pummeled by a liquid battering ram rallied support for the plight of the blacks.

ON Edit: That's one way to discipline those rowdy and uppity nigras </sarcasm>

19. As someone living in Alabama, I don't believe he stands that much of a
chance.

Contrary to popular belief, we don't all marry our cousins and immediate family.

I want to believe that aside from the pop fundie culture that makes so much noise, there are still bastions of sanity throughout the South.

21. Not so sure...
Here in Mississippi, I have had the wonderful opportunity to see us support Trent Lott, see Louisiana almost elect a Grand Wizard of the KKK, and Alabama refuse to remove slavery and segregation from their constitution.

There are a lot of people in 'Bama who would elect him to spite the Federal Judiciary. I don't see Riley winning a primary, unless all the Dems vote on the Republican ticket (we can do this in MS, I'm not sure about AL).

23. they refused to remove slavery and segregation from the
constitution, because of the additional stuff that was added to the bill, atleast that was the talk. I am sure there was some that had ulterior motives

who knows I voted to have it removed.

I think it would pass if they leave out the other stuff

then again my tylenol pm is kicking in, so I am known to be clueless as I am getting drowsey

25. This was the whole goal of his ten commandments battle...
I said this countless times last year. He was carving out a memorable name for himself, so that when he faced off with Riley, who isn't a very popular gov. in Alabama, he would handily whip him.

31. well, he's no fob james or guy hunt. two positive things
that can be said about him.

and he did put his neck on the line for an increase in the property tax. though the irony of being pilloried by his own people for backing the increase was pretty funny.
