Cuba Erects Sign Linking U.S. and Nazis
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/cuba_us

~snip~

The sign was to show "solidarity with people who are being held and intimidated and whose rights are being denied by the Cuban government," Secretary of State Colin Powell (news - web sites) told The Associated Press Friday in Washington. "And the Cuban government's response is to ... show the world a swastika? I don't think that is very wise on their part."

Cuba's Parliament Speaker Ricardo Alarcon called the U.S. mission's display "rubbish" on Wednesday and said Cason seemed "desperate to create problems." No other Cuban officials have commented.

Wayne Smith, who headed the U.S. mission here during the Carter and Reagan administrations and has long advocated restoring normal diplomatic relations with Cuba, said he thought the images of prisoner abuse in Iraq (news - web sites) were an appropriate response by Castro's regime.

"If I were in their shoes, this is what I would do — call attention to the fact that the United States is now guilty of torture, of massive violations of human rights," Smith said by telephone from Washington.

"Yes, I'd like to see the 75 all released, but we're in no position now to criticize anyone," he said.

Tourists take pictures in front of a massive billboard showing photographs of Iraqi prisoners being abused by American soldiers in front of the U.S. interest section in Havana, Cuba on Friday, Dec. 17, 2004. The U.S. Interest Section ignored a demand earlier this week to remove Christmas decorations that include a reference to dissidents jailed by Fidel Castro (news -

1. (Sigh) Sad to say, but it's true. Would we ever come to believe that the
U.S. would be viewed like this? What have these neocons done to our country? We've lost total respect in the world.

5. Very good Cuba! Very, very good!
a Greek traveler said it simply represented the truth.

"These are the crimes in Iraq, the torture of Iraqi people by the Americans," said Antonio Nankoudis. He then pointed to the U.S. mission, saying, "And there are the assassins."

14. I wish they put
the swastika the (bad) Nazi way instead of the (good) sacred way. They have completely different meanings.
Anyway, it is true that they are right about this. It is very scary, but it is true.

15. I don't get this "sacred way" distinction
If a swastika implies circular movement, a quarter rotation doesn't imply progress.

18. I think he means the other way was a Hindu spiritual symbol
That was taken over and corrupted by the Nazis, so the "good way" pre-dates the Nazi way by centuries - even millenia, I think.

17. True, the U.S. is in no position to lecture any other country anymore

Especially Cuba, given that the U.S. is maintaining an incarceration compound that has been the site of illegal detainment and torture on that very island.

Castro once more shows that he can be pretty clever in the counter-propaganda department.

On edit - Powell's lame response just emphasizes the fact that the Bush administration knows how little moral authority it has.
