Gunman kills self hours after opening fire at Anaheim-area's Crystal Cathe
GARDEN GROVE, Calif. — The conductor of the Crystal Cathedral Orchestra shot and killed himself early Friday, hours after opening fire with a hangun in his office within the massive church complex.

No one was hurt when 57-year-old Johnnie Carl, the orchestra’s conductor for the last 29 years, fired about four shots shortly before 5 p.m. in his office Thursday, and it did not appear he was trying to hit anybody, police said. Children in a day care center were rushed to safety.

1. the hypocrisy killed him
maybe georgebushamerica is an evil place, and a musical genius might suddenly realize he threw his life away (working for rich grunting pigs like robert shiller and the 'crystal' cathedral) and the sight of geebush pretending he was president of killin machine
international was too much....

2. Robert Schuler never claimed to be anything but what he is.
He is not a Fundamentalist, nor is he--to my knowledge--a member of the religious conspiracy that has taken over our country.

Rather, he's a disciple of Norman Vincent Peale's "prosperity" movement, which claims that positive thinking can give a person everything s/he needs to live, and then some. Can't fault them for that, IMO. We all want to live prosperous lives; we live in noble poverty only when we are forced to.

3. Johnnie Carl was also a noted and successful commercial arranger/conductor
He was a very talented working musician -- he arranged and conducted music in concert and on CD for the likes of Celine Dion and John Tesh. He had a reputation as a complete musician's musician -- a fast study and a flair for understanding the nuts and bolts of inventive prchestration.

He had a long history of manic-depressive disorder, and in recent days it had become severe. At his age, it is sometimes the result of an underlying metabolic condition. Schuller talked about it in one wire service report: "A disease killed him -- just like a cancer, can come back when no one expects it."

It's also worth noting that the Crystal Cathedral had and retains far and away the best and most innovative musical taste of any of the televangelist programs, largely in part due to Carl and other musicians who work and worked with Schuller, including legendary organist Virgil Fox (a name that is instantly familiar to serious classical music lovers).
