Congress Criticizes Bush* on Plans for Spaceflight (Secrecy)
President's Views Are Sought by Hill

Democratic lawmakers complained yesterday that the administration is making secret plans for the future of manned space flight without consulting Congress, while Republicans urged President Bush to enunciate his views on the future of the space program.

(snip)

"The space policy must be a consensus, which means it needs to be made in the light of day," Gordon said. "We don't need a secret space policy; we need a national space policy."

O'Keefe said the space policy discussions are similar to internal reviews conducted by previous administrations -- in which aides serve up options to the president -- and at first refused to provide any details of those meetings or say who was heading the review.

Under further questioning by Hall, the ranking Democrat, O'Keefe said there is no chairman per se but a "coordinating effort" and that the conversations have included Bush, Cheney, White House Chief of Staff Andrew H. Card Jr., and officials of the Departments of Commerce and Defense and other agencies. He said White House chief political aide Karl Rove has not taken part.

4. The difference between space-flight and MANNED space-flight.
It's an old dichotomy that's shaped the program for the last half century. The dem. view is that the human factor gets the interest and therefore the bucks necessary. The rep. view is that the human factor just adds costs and we'll steal the money necessary.

Do a google on the military facilities between Yuma and El Paso ( the area where the last shuttle started breaking up) keeping in mind the M/I combine and put on your tinfoil hat. Take a lunch along and write back in three days. See Ya.
