Four Kurds shot dead in northern Iraq market

KIRKUK, Iraq, Dec 19 (Reuters) - Unknown gunmen shot dead four Kurds in a market in Iraq's northern town of Hawija on Sunday, the second such attack in as many days, police said.

They said the attackers, who opened fire with assault rifles, escaped.

Two Kurds were killed in the same town, some 200 km (130 miles) north of the capital, on Friday.

Tensions in and around the ethnically-mixed provincial capital of Kirkuk are running high as the Jan. 30 election approaches, and some politicians have called for the poll there to be postponed.
