Honduran President Says He Will Increase Security After Receiving Death Threats

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (AP) -- President Ricardo Maduro announced Monday that he was increasing security for himself and his family after receiving death threats from criminal groups the government is investigating in Honduras.

"We have information from a good source that someone would like to hurt me and my family,'' Maduro told a news conference. "This has to do with threats I've received from groups outside Honduras and inside the country,'' he said.

Maduro said the source of the threats are "common or organized crime groups that are being investigated by my government.''

Maduro, 59, has been in office since 2001 and completes his term in 2006.

1. You can almost see the strings
from Rumsfeld's hands in that picture.

Dance, my marionette!

2. The Salvatruchas Are Worth Worrying About
From what I've read, the Salvatruchas gang might actually be worth worrying about. They're vicious, well-organized, and relatively well-armed.

Despite my low opinion of the Honduran government, I don't see why I have to see any threat to such a government as ipso facto being a good thing. While a Castro or a Sandino might have sought to overthrow a regime or even an entire social order, it doesn't always follow that a extra-constitutional force capable of warring with the state needs necessarily be noble or pure either in its motives or tactics.

Sorry, kiddies, but I don't see the Salvatruchas as being noble or pure.

3. Sadly, he's probably right...
Hondurans don't have much of a choice, their two main parties are both right wing... and well, as far as right wingers go, Maduro at least hasn't been a traditional corrupt.
