President: Deficit will be cut in half in five years
WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush said Monday he will submit a federal budget that will half the deficit in five years and maintain strict spending discipline.

"We will submit a budget that fits the times. It will provide every tool and resource to the military, will protect the homeland, and meet other priorities of the government," he said.

This is just what I predicted. VaginalHair deliberately let the budget get out of control so he can use it as an excuse to eliminate all government social programs. Welcome to the soup line folks!

51. Exactly! All of the projections that show halving the deficit,
which by the way is still LARGER than the previous record deficits, are based on the "tax cuts" sunsetting. There are NO projections that show a reduction of deficits if his tax cuts are permanent.

It's Leave no Halliburton Executive behind. Sarcasm off......

I remember a long time ago before it was common knowledge that Halliburton was a paid subsidiary of this current administration, Letterman made a comment directed to shrubby to the effect that when he wrote out the $87 billion dollar check (see how long ago this was?) to remember that Halliburton is spelled with two L's. I nearly fell off my chair laughing. Not laughing now, though.

Edit: addendum: Maybe I have that backwards. Maybe it's that this administration is a paid subsidiary of Halliburton. Hmmmmmm.

55. no problem, there was a lot of discussion about this fact
in the spring and early summer - even picked up in the media (a little)... never could figure out why this wasn't pushed by dems and Kerry - I think the analysis which indicated this little fact was done by the nonpartisan congressional budget office.

The choice of "five" years is VERY intentional. And there bush was on the campaign trail touting this "halving of the deficit" while simultaneously trying to bully to get his tax cuts made permanent... which drove me nuts as one item totally nullifies the other.

84. Yeah, remember in Shrub's Thanksgiving speech...
when he told everyone to "think of those less fortunate....to help out that Military family down the street."

That's exactly what he meant. He wants US to PERSONALLY fill-in for not only what the Military is not getting in way of supplies...but ALSO to pick-up the "social programs" who characteristically help out the "less fortunate." By soon cutting SS & SSDI & Medicare/Medical as well, he will either give the "unfortunate" Disabled and Elderly the option of moving in with family, and expecting family to support them for life: OR expects total strangers to give them hand-outs on the street corner; OR if the "less fortunate" can do neither...in the words of Charles Dickens:

"If they're gonna die, do it now...and decrease the World's surplus population."

By starving public programs and shifting power to his own base including the religious upper middle class and higher classes, the idiot in effect has attempted to destroy the foundation of secular, public offerings in American society.

Wow! We're going to keep adding to the debt, but we're going to do it at a slower pace! Woohoo! That's like me telling my wife, "I'm going to keep buying things with credit cards, but just not quite as much." Our debt will continue rising, but it will be at a slower pace! Wonderful. And how is he going to even accomplish that incredibly modest goal? Cut all social programs?

His tax cuts have killed our fiscal situation.

44. Most Fundamental Problem Is. . .
. . .that this presumes that 5 years of $200 billion plus deficits are ok. The deficit exceed $450 billion, so over five years, if the goal is $225 billion, that leaves an average deficit for 5 years of $337.5 billion. That adds nearly $1.9 TRILLION to the debt!

And this is considered good fiscal policy that would be touted as progress in a press conference?

What a dumbass!

Every time deficit reduction is discussed, most people think we're talking about getting rid of the national debt, when in fact, even with this idiot rose-colored glasses scenario, the debt just grows and grows, even if such a mark is met.

And of course, as we all know, social programs, the environment, and all sorts of regulations will be scrapped. I hope he calls for more tax cuts for the wealthy; he needs to be seen as the reckless, stupid greedhead he is.

70. This is just crazy talk!
The man is totally out to lunch. When will someone in the press call him on this stupidity. It's outrageous that he can stand up there and say something this far fetched and get away with it. It's one thing if Rush spews out this kind of blatant lie but Bush shouldn't be allowed to get away with it.

72. If he said he will cut it in half, that means it will double.

73. Plan to halve deficit in five years is now three years old
Remember the funny sign: "free beer tomorrow"? And of course, it isn't tomorrow yet, is it? Bush has been telling us that the budget deficit will halved in five years since 2002: but he didn't say WHICH five years he was speaking of. What a dick.

Like Bush I, Bush II simply lies about balanced budgets happening due to some impossible "discipline" occuring in what is the distant future. When Bush II leaves office, there will still be a plan to half the deficits in five years in place.

82. And that money will come from where? Social Security/Medicare Trust fund?
No doubt about that. With a war in Iran just down the road.

Does he even know what "strict spending discipline" means? Right...that new Presidential Yacht! And the Guardsmen who will NOT receive full benefits, including meds...and pay (some have been waiting since June?!).
