Miami's top cop seeks to declaw demonstrators during trade talks
http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/news/local/6741642.htmMiami Police Chief John Timoney was expected to ask city commissioners today for extra police powers to patrol demonstrations at an upcoming trade summit.
If the commission adopts the controversial new ordinance, objects such as glass containers, gas masks and poles to hold up signs will be banned not only from demonstrations, but also from parades.

Lida Rodriguez-Taseff, head of the Miami chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, said the ordinance is short-sighted. By adopting it to deal with a single event, other future events and rights could be jeopardized, she said.

Max Rameau, a founder of the Coalition Against Police Brutality and Harassment and frequent critic of the police department, said police could use the proposed restrictions to selectively enforce the law and arrest people.
''This obviously has great potential for abuse,'' Rameau said.
