Press Groups Honors Journalists Devoted to Freedom

PARIS (Reuters) - Algerian journalist Hafnaoui Ghoul, Chinese editor Liu Xiaobo and Mexican newspaper Zeta won prizes from a media rights group on Tuesday rewarding devotion to press freedoms.

Each of the winners will receive 2,500 euros ($3,347) from Paris-based Reporters Without Borders (RSF) which gives the awards to highlight the threat to press freedom and freedom of information.

Ghoul, who is also a human rights activist, won the prize for journalists who show devotion to media freedoms through their work, by taking a stand or by their attitude.

A provincial correspondent for the daily newspaper El Youm, he has spent several months in jail this year after accusing local officials of negligence in the deaths of babies at a state hospital in the city of Djelfa.
