Youth Smoking, Drug Use Down Again
LINK

Youth smoking and drug abuse declined again this year, concludes a federal study that also found marked progress over the last decade in persuading teens to avoid cigarettes and illicit substances.

The smoking rate among younger teens (search) is half what it was in the mid-1990s, and drug use by that group is down by one-third, says the University of Michigan study.

10. Walters
As long as John Walters runs the show, they'll go down, no matter reality...figures lie, & liars figure, especially with Bill "Mr. Virtue" Bennett's clone, at the helm...

"Mission Accomplished"...yeah, right...just after, the cow jumped over the moon...the economy's cranking, too. A damn paradise, yes, indeedy...sheesh...

Rose colored glasses...on....who pays for that study, anyway?

500+ lbs of cocaine in W.Va., no kiddin'...3000 lbs of weed in Az., yeah, but, nobody's doin it...weez gots dem "moral values"...yes siree...must've been headin' to a blue state...

16. Maybe
But imports, might be a better indicator, than asking a kid...who knows, but everything else, says the borders are porous, as a sieve, so either adults are using, like never before, or this study, is rubbish. I'd be willing to bet, the study of adult use, is "down like never before". So who uses, all this stuff, anyway? Not the "red states", they've cornered the "moral values", so the "blue states" must be stoned, to the bone...

Where's the WMDs??? We all know, they're there...

Cynical??? Guilty as charged...

I'm not questioning you, but when I see all these headlines, that says heroin's purer than ever, cocaine's seized everywhere, & pot's coming in, by the truck load, etc., I question it all.

It just never adds up, to me. There's got to be a more realistic approach. I really think the cigarette approach, may lead to a better way, whatever it might be, maybe regulation, & actual control, instead of trying to use this smoke & mirrors, with anonymous studies, as proof, that seem to say, whatever they wish them to say.

Always seemed to me, if you asked a criminal, if they committed a crime, you could pretty much, predict the response. "Did you rob that bank?" "Well, no...not me, it was that guy, behind that tree."

2. I wouldn't be surprised if it really is down
but you always have to be careful of these federal studies. Remember they spend millions of dollars on anti-drug programs and have to have something to show for it, so they have been known to skew these studies.

4. Not only that, but I remember in high school...
They passed out surveys assuring us that no one would know who put what answers. They asked about sexual activity, drug use, smoking, drinking, etc. If they're basing this on those surveys, how real is the data?

5. Right, but I do believe those smoking statistics
At three to seven bucks a pack, it's too expensive for most teenagers to get hooked on cigarettes, although they may smoke socially to impress their friends.

Addiction just aint in the cards until they get real jobs.

3. Thanks or the link to Fox news- NOT
Please have the courtesy to warn people if you simply must link to Fox news. I for one don't want to EVER click on that site- and in adition, I consider ANYTHING I find there to be suspect. If you are interested in the topic- just link to the study itself. Took me all of 30 seconds to find.

7. fox is generally regarded as right wing propaganda..........
because they are.

One of the major complaints many people have is the complicity of networks like Fox in the dumbing down of america. It's best to let people know you are posting a link to fox. Many of of refuse to give them any business including web hits. I have not read an article or watched their station in many years.

9. Pox Nuze is a propaganda outlet for the Reich.
Every "click" gives them revenues from their advertisers. Many of us on DU abhor the overt dishonesty of that media septic tank. Furthermore, those who read it are typically victims of disinformation to the degree they're Bushbots. Show me a Pox Nuze reader/viewer and I'll show you someone more likely than not to be a reichbot.

8. Probably because most of their health conscious
and socially conscious democrat parents pushed laws to prohibit smoking in work places and other public places. And the STUPID DAMN trial attornies sued the socks off the tobacco companies for tageting kids in commercial print like Joe Camel etc..

Now less parents smoke, there are fewer commercials aimed at teens in print, so...they see it less.

Now they smoke less.. go figure.. blame it on a LW nutbags too will ya!

18. I wonder if they include prescription drugs..
in this study.

I think prescription pills have replaced street drugs in popularity among teens.

I'm not surprised at all that smoking is down. It's down among every segment of the population.

21. I really don't see any logic in your statement 0007
My post had nothing to do with Fox News, but rather, with the good news being reported.

For those of you who can not read Fox, here is the story from ABC News. Better now?
