Many in GOP Wary of Social Security Plan

1 hour, 1 minute ago Politics - U. S. Congress

By ALAN FRAM, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - If there will ever be a year when the political stars are aligned for President Bush (news - web sites) to revamp Social Security (news - web sites), it may be 2005. But he still must persuade wary Republicans in Congress to follow his lead.

"To be crassly political, there's nothing in it for members of Congress," said Rep. Ray LaHood (news, bio, voting record), R-Ill., predicting that supportive lawmakers would face television ads accusing them of gutting Social Security when they run for re-election. "It will be a very, very tough sell for the president."

LaHood, a moderate who coasted to re-election in November, is not alone. Of the 232 Republicans who will serve in the House next year, at least 125 to 150 will need "a lot of hand-holding," said Rep. Mark Foley (news, bio, voting record), R-Fla., who said he supports Bush's push

2. even my repuke conman is backing off SS reform
And he has what is known as a "safe seat". I think all Congresspeople who support Bush are running scared on this. I can already see the ad a Dem opponant could run, showing a little old granny lady starving or not having the money for her prescriptions, with a voiceover saying , "Congressman Repuke voted to destroy SS as we know it! Restore sanity to Washington-vote Democratic!"

4. we are already there
<< a little old granny lady starving or not having the money for her prescriptions >>

Sadly enought we are already there. If anything, Social Security needs to be made stronger. They should dump that 1.5 million for TV ads back in SS! So many people trying to live now on SS barely get by or end up going to food banks, etc.

Next, Medicare.

:grr:

3. If Repubs destroy Social Security you can say GoodBye to them
Social Security is a mainstay for America ...Republicans can be proud if they destroy it. But I think it will literally destroy the Republican Party!!!

7. There is a blog which is trying to get a tally on where everyone stands
The blog was established to document exactly where each representative and senator in the 109th Congress stands on Social Security "privatization", a.k.a. Social Security abolition.

They are asking for volunteers to call their representative's offices and get a confirmation on where they stand on the issue.

9. I'm hoping all his political capital is burned up on this unnecessary war
Not that I want bad things to happen. But when a Chimpanzee deals you a lemon, make lemondade.
