Downloading backlash?
Teens express mixed reactions to pirating issue, lawsuits

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Record industry lawsuits, filed Monday in an effort to curb sharing of copyright music over the Internet, instead may have sparked a backlash among music lovers -- many of whom aren't even downloaders.

The lawsuits prompted discussions in homes and classrooms, where teenagers are a large portion of the people logging to peer-to-peer networks such as Grokster and Kazaa.

And the Recording Industry Association of America said in one target of its nationwide legal assault, a New York woman had already settled her case for $2,000 Tuesday on behalf of her 12-year-old daughter, and others were discussing deals. Meanwhile, a Marin County, Calif., man sued the trade group on behalf of all California residents, saying its "amnesty" program is misleading.

In the two days since the music industry filed 261 federal suits against individuals across the country, fear has sent some music downloaders running to delete music files from their computers, and outrage prompted others to defiantly swap even more songs.

YA the BackLash is that kids are going to do it even more out of spite! We are talking about Minors here! :bounce:

1. stop sharing or buying RIAA member music
Doing so will take away from them the only leg they have to stand on.

4. The only problem is if you love music
Practically every label belongs to this organization...even the stuff that I love this is considered obscure.

There needs to be an Open Source music movement / label.

Here are some of the IRAA corporate Nazi greed whores.

RIAA members include the "Big Six" record companies:
Vivendi Universal’s Universal group,

EMI group PLC.

I hope the RIAA are happy. I know many people my age who are refusing to buy any CDs. The music industry can't win this battle.

*edit* Just realised my avatar is still a pirate flag. Heh, that's for Pirates of the Caribbean, not music pirating...though it still fits

8. I don't
But I heard that way too many times in the Napster days. They got rid of Napster so we went to AudioGalaxy. They got rid of that so now people are doing the Kazaa and Grokster thing. RIAA sues, apparently some sue back. They keep losing sales and respect and there are 4,091,458 people on Kazaa right now. That's over 790 million files. Are they going to sue each and every one of us?

11. Do you think they would actually do it?
The backlash has been bad enough, I think, considering they've sued less than 300 people (though 12-year-olds are apparently fair game :grr: ) out of millions. If they were to go into thousands, or millions, they could see HUGE boycotts. They'll go to another tactic when they see this one's not working.

10. There's more than Kazaa
to boot. There are P2P services that aren't in the public eye but have a large number of users.

Sort of 'Word of Mouth' services that don't really advertise their existance but are more than happy to let you use them. And alot of people use multiple services.

I think Kazaa sold its users out and they should get dumped for it. Use a free P2P service instead.

I really hope all of this turns back around and slaps the RIAA like a pissed off Samuel L Jackson with a lightsaber.

12. Kazaa.....
I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole. It's loaded with spyware.

The latest version of Kazaa lite (K++) is free of ads and spyware, plus it is immune to RIAA snooping (for the moment anyway). One warning: Google caved in to the Kazaa people, most links to Kazaa lite have been removed from it's search engine. There are other search engines......

14. Very true
But regular Kazaa is like the poster child of file sharing in the media. Kazaa Lite is much better.
