Bush to Renominate Judges Blocked by Democrats
Bush to Renominate Judges Blocked by Democrats
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush (news - web sites) said on Thursday he would renominate a group of controversial judicial nominees who were blocked by Senate Democrats, signaling the start of a second-term battle over the make-up of the nation's top courts.

Emboldened by his re-election victory and gains by Republicans in the Senate, Bush plans to renominate a total of 20 nominees to the nation's court of appeals and district courts, the White House said.

1. 0H~ Jays'us I don't wanna look! Here we go again -
" During the hard-fought presidential campaign, Bush sought to brand Senate Democrats, who blocked 10 of his judicial nominees, as obstructionists. Democrats accused Bush of trying to tilt the courts with "right-wing extremists."

10. Reid was pretty instrumental in helping block the other judges
and people need to look at his record beyond abortion issues..environmental groups and other traditionally liberal groups give him high marks...right wing judges effect far more than just abortion

He is recycling his biggest losers. If that is all he has got, the Democrats from the Democratic wing of the Democratic Party should be saying it loud and often.

16. He's a BOLD leader,
determined never to back down from any position. It energizes his base when he he forces the dems to a defensive position. It also will provide a distraction from the sticky matters of Social Security, Iraq, and his own party speaking out against him. Besides which he's trying hard never to be a lame duck.

13. When you rig elections and nobody stops you, you are accountable to nobody
Believe me, this is gonna get a whole lot worse if BushCo is allowed to get away with election fraud. He will remake the country in the image of the religious right. Prepare to have bible thumpers force their views on the rest of us as law while BushCo continues to bleed the country dry.

15. There's the ol' fascist spirit of 'democracy' again.
Edited on Thu Dec-23-04 03:20 PM by TahitiNut
It's akin to a brattish 3-year-old repeatedly throwing a tantrum until he gets his way. Politicians make lousy parents - the kind who resignedly say to the brat "OK, just this one time." Is it any wonder that kids throw tantrums?

There's not the slightest accommodation or respect for any other perspective - it's totalitarian: "my way or the highway." It's insanity: doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result. Sadly, at the political level it often results in more extensive insanity.

Notice the respect for the Constitution? Where it says "advise and consent" the Bushoilini Regime ignores the "advise" and, failing to get "consent," just keeps on obsessively hammering away. This is the most antidemocratic regime in this country's history by far.

I'm reminded of the fable of the camel with its nose in the tent.

17. Dem's won't cave
But the pubs will change the rules to ram these judges through the senate. Read somewhere that Frist is going to put Brownback and Colburn on the senate judiciary committee. These guys are right win fanatics and will help move all nominees out of committee. Frist is running for prez and will change the rules (nuclear option) so that the filibuster will not apply to judicial nominations. We are screwed.

18. Not if the Repug party continues to split
We ARE seeing it happen now. Moderate pugs are starting to speak out, like about Rumsfeld. I wonder if the religious right's push will make the moderates speak out even more.

19. Moderates pubs hate Rumsfeld
Rumsfeld is an arrogant bastard who has made many enemies on capitol hill. He is abrasive, mean spirited and has stepped on many toes. The repub senators see this as an opportunity for pay back. Regarding judicial nominations, even the liberal repubs backed all of these nominations during the last session of congress. We should not confuse this personality conflict with Rumsfeld as a shift in policy on the part of the repubs. They would support Himler for the SCOTUS if AWOL nominated him.

31. WHAT Moderate Republicans?
You mean Chafee, Snowe, and Collins? Maybe Specter?
That makes 4. There are no other moderate Republicans in the Senate.

Even if all 4 of them switch parties (which will never happen anyway)
the Republicans would still have an absolute majority in the Senate.

The situation in the House is far worse.

20. They must expect that they can also do away with filibustering...
Edited on Thu Dec-23-04 04:22 PM by Dover
I'm sure they will try with all their might.

Cornyn and other Republicans say the November election increased Bush's clout, though he still lacks the 60 votes to overcome a vote-blocking filibuster.

In addition to Owen and Pryor, the list of nominees include: Terrence Boyle, David McKeague, Susan Neilson, Henry Saad, Richard Griffin, William Myers, Janice Brown, Brett Kavanaugh, William Haynes, Thomas Griffith, James Dever, Thomas Ludington, Robert Conrad, Daniel Ryan, Peter Sheridan, Paul Crotty, Sean Cox, and J. Michael Seabright.

I read somewhere that the Republicans are considering changing senate rules so that judicial nominees can't be filibustered.

27. Why can't this MF'ing idiot learn from his mistakes???
The ONE F'ing mistake that this sorry POS can admit to is in appointing personnel and he won't name names. So now it looks like he is going to name them, by bringing them up again. Do you suppose if we all asked Santa to drop him in the middle of the North Atlantic, our wish would come true???

and Pryor is the devil-incarnate (after rumsFailed).... if he stays on the 11th Cir., say good bye to equal rights, voter rights, women's rights to control their own bodies, and multitudes of other hard won rights from the past decades - and hello 1800's style of justice and life...
