5. Well...
Considering the initial quake was nine points a 6.2 aftershock seems accurate. This is the biggest earthquake in the last forty years.

21. Aftershocks can be nearly as intensive as the original earthquake
The recent (October 23) earthquake that struck Niigata province in Japan, for example, registered a magnitude of 6.8 on the Richter scale, and there were several aftershocks shortly thereafter, three of which were 6.0 or above.

3. Wow. Thank you for the update, F.
I just finished reading a book by Jenny Cockell where she writes that in the near future, 9/10 ths of the world's population will be wiped out. She mentions flooding as the major culprit. She talks about environmental issues such as global warming and the melting of the polar ice caps. Also the fact that millions of people live very close to coastal areas, so they are vulnerable to flooding.

I checked the inside jacked of the printing date, and it says 1994. Very, very eerie.

6. Thanks for letting us know; the network news would barely mention it
All day long, the story of 11,000 deaths was relegated to a garden-variety headline story on the evening news -- then onto to holiday shopping sales results and football scores.

7. Horrible. And I wouldn't be surprised...
...if there are ultimately several times that number dead or missing and millions homeless. So throw another log on the fire, pass the eggnog, and get ready for the after-Christmas sales, right?

on line relegates the story to a line (link, no other text) a third of the way down front page, underneath the movies, restaurants etc. section; leads with dolphins beat browns and a picture of a participant in a parade. I thought that paper was a halfway serious rag?

9. That fault line is VERY active ...
Edited on Sun Dec-26-04 10:58 PM by TahitiNut
The larger squares (including the yellow) below are >7.0 on the Richter scale. This is just west of Sumatra.

The below map shows more quakes to the north and west ... all along the same fault line complex.

13. Lotta jiggling goin' on over there...but remember a 9 is 1000 times
stronger than a 6. Not that a 6 is a piece of cake (I notice one 7.3 in the list, that's pretty significant.) I just missed the Alaska one in 63, it bounced about an hour after I left there. ISTR it was an 8.x or so? (Long time ago...)

14. I believe the aftershocks
are capable of causing as much damage, if not more. So the death toll will most probably rise even higher.

A big problem with so many of these countries is that they have long low-lying coastal areas, so it's really tough to try and get away if there is a tsunami. Also, millions of people worldwide live close to the coast, so they are very vulnerable. Just awful.

I just found out a little while ago that my in-law's son was spending Christmas in Thailand. He usually camps on the beach. Luckily, we just got an email saying that he is OK.

Scary.

23. Still waiting to hear from my sister
She lives in Bangkok and her daughter was visiting for the holidays.
I've had my yahoo messenger open non-stop hoping she will pop-up on line. I called the State Department hotline and left their names and my numbers. They said they would call with news and that power is out in many places there. I can't even reach her cell phone number so maybe the air waves are jammed up too.

24. What scares me most is....
...the outbreak of disease as bodies begin to decay. There is no way with a death count this massive they will be able to properly find/bury/burn all of the dead. This could be catastrophic beyond all telling.

And something tells me, like in Haiti, the United States will not be stepping up much to help. That doesn't seem to be in our national nature anymore.

26. What scrares me more is..
.. the WHO prediction last month that another major flu epidemic is long overdue. Something along the lines of the Spanish flu, this time in Asia.

Remember, there is next to no contingency plans for most Asian nations right now, even after the SARS scare last year.

If SARS mutates, what a year for the ages 2005 will be.
