9-11 Monument With Commandments Unveiled in Government Building
9-11 Monument With Commandments Unveiled in Government Building
By Mike Schneider Associated Press Writer
Published: Sep 11, 2003

BARTOW, Fla. (AP) - A 6,000-pound monument designed to honor 9-11 victims and containing an engraving of the Ten Commandments was unveiled Thursday in Polk County's government building, just weeks after Alabama's chief judge lost a fight to keep a Ten Commandments monument displayed in a state building there.
But a representative of the American Civil Liberties Union, which challenged the Alabama display, said the Polk County granite monument was quite different from the one Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore placed in the Alabama justice building.

Polk County's American Heritage Foundation Rock is topped by a replica of the Liberty Bell. Four sides of its base are carved with quotes from historical documents, such as the Magna Carta and the Declaration of Independence, and from historic figures such as John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and John Jay.

The Ten Commandments text is the centerpiece of the Alabama monument.

"It is obvious that this is very different from the monument that Judge Moore fought for," said Darlene Williams, chair of the ACLU of Greater Tampa. Bartow is about 40 miles east of Tampa. (snip/...)

1. and what does the 10 Commandments have to do with 9/11?

Didn't religious whackiness get us into this mess in the first place?

3. If you can't slip it in one way....
Now a Sep 11 tribute. You'd have to be pretty un-Amerikan to protest that..... What a disingenious ploy.

LOL

It never ceases to amaze me.

6. I guess that one commandment
about "no graven images" doesn't really count, right?

8. So what do people think?
I don't think that it should be allowed, but I'm undecided on whether it is worth the fuss to try and get it removed. They've obviously tried to make it a losing proposition for us if we allow it or if we fight it.

Maybe someone can quietly scratch them out one night...

11. They should sue to add excepts from the Koran
Don't try to get it removed, just demand equality for other religions.

Sue for the right to add stuff from the Koran and other religious books.

That will make a better point than trying to remove it, and eventually the people who put it up might want to remove it themselves if they are forced to promote "Muslims".

16. Amen to that (from a Christian!). Make sure representations of

the spiritual callings of every innocent that died that day are on the monument.

Then the non- and anti-theists can sue (I really hope they do!).

I like this idea; I really do.

Representation of religion in any government entity is simply wrong. It belongs at home and in the place of worship, period.

It sounds as ugly as hell, too. Completely tasteless. Yuck.

9. Under this 'Junta' the *ONLY* commandments that should be displayed are
Thou shalt not kill and thou shalt not steal. Period!

10. The ACLU should sue to add sections of the Koran to the monument
Otherwise, it has to go.

They can't promote one religion above others. It's unconstitutional and unamerican.

12. It should be billed as a monument to the Jewish and Christian victims
If they're excluding other beliefs, they ought to be honest about it.

14. 8 people from my husband's company died in Tower 1,
at least one wasn't a Christian.

Disrespectful as hell! and I'm a Christian.

Those planes had no religious preference, even non-theists and anti-theists died.

This makes my blood boil. I am so, so angry about this.

No wonder so many of you dislike us--stuff like this gives you plenty of reason.

18. Sounds like a growth industry, since
they will have to be removed, then replaced, every time there's a challenge!
