BBC: Wave toll 'could exceed 100,000'

The number of dead from Sunday's Indian Ocean sea surges is likely to rise above 100,000, the Red Cross has said.

Senior agency official Peter Rees said he thought the toll would rise sharply when victims are counted on India's remote Andaman and Nicobar islands.

Almost 77,000 people have so far been confirmed dead.

US President George W Bush pledged to set up an international coalition, with Australia, India and Japan, to co-ordinate the relief effort.

This is an aerial view of the village of Meulaboh, Indonesia in Aceh province which was destroyed by Sunday's earthquake and tsunami taken on Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004. Officials have recovered 3,400 bodies in the village so far, but they said they expect to find at least 10,000 died here from Sunday's 9.0 magnitude underwater earthquake and massive tidal waves. There is a video on the BBC website of the tsunami hitting the town:

My God, I know many people who have family there. I can only pray that they somehow managed to survive.

7. I'd say 100,000 is lowball
I'd wager, if that wasn't so macabre, on a quarter million. Especially if you count deaths directly related to this disaster in terms of disease. By January 15, I think we'll be looking at an estimated 250,000 fatalities and a million seriously wounded. Remember, there are places where people have no idea what happened, places with no contact with the outside world. Myanmar anyone?

There are few worse places in the world for this to have happened, death toll speaking.
