U.S. August retail sales up 0.6% vs 1.5 forecast By Corbett B. Daly
WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) - U.S. consumers opened their wallets at a slower than expected pace in August, driving up retail sales in the month by 0.6 percent on purchases of autos, gasoline, electronics and household goods, the Commerce Department said Friday. Auto sales in August rose 0.5 percent. Excluding autos, retail sales rose 0.7 percent.

Since the economy was supposed to "take off" in the second half of this year - I would say that the truth is about to catch up with the lies.

Wonder what the spin cycle will try to wash this with....Shout?

(edit for typo)

1. I work in retail, and I am sure

That what little jump we got in retail sales had to do with *Bush's Child tax credit hitting at the end of July, right before the back-to-school season. Now that money's spent.

Things are about to get really, really, REALLY bad, folks.

2. So besides being jobless, the recovery is also workless?
Hmmmm. Might we want to reconsider the usage of the word recovery?

5. no back to school push?
dam that`s bad..i `ve noticed at the local shop-ko,midwest store-that just about everything was 20% off, that has to cut into profits, but if you can`t sell at sticker you have to do something. also the us car industry had bad numbers with crysler losing out to toyaota for the first time. more plant closings, layoffs, and cuts in benifits coming for the us car industry.georgie boy is toast if the economy doesn`t pick up by spring..will be interesting to see what kind of bookings for spring and summer us industry has...

6. So, CBS marketwatch editors used the term "up" misleadingly
in the title of the brief article ...

... they should have included the word "only" in the title

"U.S. August retail sales up (ONLY) 0.6% vs 1.5 forecast"
