US Democrat senators back extra funds for military in Iraq

BAGHDAD (AFP) - US Democrat senators Joseph Lieberman and Mark Dayton offered tacit backing to an expected 75-80 billion dollar White House supplemental budget request for the US military in Iraq (news - web sites) that will probably be submitted in February.

The pair, on a one-day visit to Iraq, vowed to spend whatever it takes to make the military strong in the country gripped by a 20- month insurgency.

"We will stand here across party lines in Congress, down Pennsylvania Avenue working with President (George W.) Bush to give the American military whatever they need to achieve success here," said Lieberman, the influential senator who ran for vice president in 2000.

With control of Congress, Bush's Republican party does not need the Democrats to get legislation passed. But the support of influential Democrats would be a hedge against any Republican dissen

14. et tu, Dayton?
LIEberman I expected to rubber-stamp the repug agenda, but DAYTON? Minnesota used to have REAL Democrat Senators... *cough* Wellstone *cough* , but Dayton has been a TOTAL disappointment lately. It's the last straw with Dayton and I will NOT campaign for him in 2006. Find a Democrat we can be proud of to run for that seat, not this wimpy clueless retard. It's embarrassing to see him "represent" the party whenever he gets air time on CSPAN.

:grr:

Fuck Lieberman. He was instrumental in getting the Enron loopholes in place and was one reason voting for Gore was so difficult.

DINO.

the article referred to Lieberman as "influential" and a "democrat". Must be a typo or something.

3. What Joe meant to say...
"We will stand here across party lines in Congress, whimpering, bent over and begging to be Bush's prison-bitch."

Why doesn't Lieberman just spare us any more confusion and just join the Republican party already?

6. But,but...
these cowards don't want to be portrayed as being "weak on terror". If they want to be taken seriously as advocates of the "war on terror", they might start by not being a couple of fucking Neville Chamberlains. Bush has a hell of a lot more blood on his hands than bin Laden or al-Zarqawi could ever hope for. Too bad our "leadership" in the Senate is either too blind or scared to recognize it.

7. Lieberman: "growing strong democracy in Iraq" . . .
Those weren't his exact words but he was on CNN on the tv in the cafeteria this morning. I was about to say "bullshit" but an attorney sitting across the room exploded "Oh, that is such bullshit, you asshole!" I'd had that attorney pegged wrong....

But, as many of us know, Joe wouldn't know what a "Real Democracy" was if it bit him on the ass.

... vacuuming the money thrown on the latrine floor by the insurance industry and investment banking sector. He's a spineless piece of scheiss when it comes to those two industries - the Bushoilini Regime's biggest backers.

Bend over and spread 'em, Joe.

15. At some point, you have to shut off the ATM machine
I hate to be in the position of advocating defunding the troops, but that's what I now believe. No more money for war=the troops will have to be brought home. This war was illegitimate, illegal, immoral and unnecessary. Hence, "winning" it, is not really a priority for me.

...the station watched by all of the United States of Republicans.

Can he really STILL think that the extremists in the WH can be worked with? Dems should consistently write pay-as-you-go legislation for every new need and ALL decide on the same terms to use to describe how the preference in the repubs' version is to steal money from our children.

Is anybody tracking where this money is actually being spent? The troops don’t have adequate armored vehicles billions of dollars later and the countries infrastructure is still destroyed so what are they spending it on?

25. Meanwhile, the 100's of thousands of disaster victurms are awaiting a
decision or a spare moment of thinking from the horrible excuse of a pResident to see if he can spare a couple million, while at the same time not batting an eye for another 80 BILLION to cover the extra greed for Halibutton and Cheney, when we only need armor for our soldiers. I don't think armoring everyfucking vehincle would even aapproach a billion. Where's all the wasted money going now?

29. "Morale is high" says Joe
"Morale is high," Lieberman said. "They're serving with a real sense of purpose and they're proud of what they're doing. They are contributing in a difficult circumstance to a historic transformation."

He said he did not hear any soldiers complaining that their vehicles were not fully armored, adding that Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld answered that concern earlier this month.

After soldiers questioned Rumsfeld about inadequate armor on vehicles, the secretary said he expects the Army to do all it can to resolve the problem.

$80 billion to kill more Iraqis.

$35 million to help the tsunami victims.

Nice priorities, Joe.

By the way, how many times have you been wounded in combat, giving you the moral authority to be so goddamn gung-ho to send our kids off to be murdered for a lie?

I voted against you this year, you rotten, soulless son of a bitch, and I'll vote against you however many times you continue to run. We finally got rid of that piece of human sewage Rowland, and you're next, you traitor.

33. This reminds me of building more freeways in L.A.
If 500 miles of freeways are congested an extra 5 miles won help much.

We're spending $450 billion/ yr on defense and our troops are digging in landfills for extra metal to protect their vehicles.

The problem is NOT money.

When domestic government programs fail, politicians quickly blame inefficient and ineffective government.

But when our military fails its rewarded with more money.
