Fox's 24 Angers Muslim Group

Fox is under fire from at least one group for scenes in the Jan. 9 debut of drama 24 that portray a Muslim teen-ager and his parents as members of a terrorist cell plotting a mass attack on Americans.


It’s the second Fox show to generate controversy in the past two weeks, following demands by the National Council for Adoption that Fox cancel Who’s Your Daddy, a guess-your-birthfather reality special the network may develop into a series.

Concerns about 24 were raised by a preview of the Jan. 9 season-opener in a DVD sent to some general entertainment magazine subscribers..

On of the villains is a Walkman-toting, bubble-gum-chewing teenager who fights with his conservative Dad about dating an American girl and talking on the phone.

1. They shouldn't be so quick to condemn 24

Previous seasons have produced story lines where Muslims turned out to be a scapegoat for something more sinister, such as a government conspiracy. It's a great show and not stereotypical at all.

3. In fact, usually it isn't a Muslim who's responsible at all.

I think they should wait and see, instead of basing their arguments on a few clips of an episode that hasn't even come out yet.

I don't like a lot of what Fox does, but I'll wait and see on this one.

As far as I know, they don't produce it. It's the only program on that network I watch, and I love it.

6. SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!

It'll end up being like last year, with it starting out as 2 Mexican drug dealers with a deadly virus and ending with a crazy British special forces guy. I seriously doubt Kiefer Sutherland wants anything to do with a backlash from Muslim advocacy groups by having them portrayed as evil terrorists. Not that the freeps wouldn't love it of course.

2. Controversies like this sure beat paying for advertising

I wonder how much money Fox would have to spend in advertising dollars to get the equivalent amount of coverage that these controversies create.
