Annan, Aid Agencies Seek Ways to Protect Aid Workers in Iraq
GENEVA (AP) - U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan met with aid agency chiefs Friday to seek ways of improving protection for relief workers trying to rebuild Iraq.
The United Nations was shaken by the Aug. 19 suicide truck bombing at its Baghdad base that killed 22 people, including Sergio Vieira de Mello, the global body's top envoy in Iraq and a personal friend of Annan. Aid workers from the international Red Cross and other organizations also have been killed in Iraq.
