Seeking 3,000 Missing Americans
Seeking 3,000 Missing Americans

WASHINGTON, Dec. 30, 2004

(AP) The State Department says the search continues for American victims of last weekend's earthquake-tsunami. Fourteen Americans are known to have died. Seven Americans were killed in Thailand, seven in Sri Lanka.

Some 600 Americans who were originally listed as missing have been found, but up to 3,000 have not been located....

(What an eerie coincidence that the number of missing, possibly dead Americans in the tsunamis is the same number lost in 9/11!)

1. Unfortunately, this may be
the only thing that will get the wingnuts to care about this disaster. Australia is missing 5,000 people, and Germany, the Netherlands, and other European nations are missing thousands as well.

2. The losses are mind-boggling.
I just read an article saying the losses in Indonesia alone may actually be over 400,000! (No, that's not a typo) They flew search planes over the outlying islands--and found some entire islands are gone--totally submerged. Others had no buildings left standing and no signs of life at all.

6. Also CNN was showing a flyover of some Indonesian towns
and there were no towns there anymore. You couldn't even see any debris piled up anywhere...it was as if everything was totally washed away. There were trees and grass.

3. My Irish Uncle returned from Pakut just 1 day before Xmas.
He was always known as lucky leo.

On December 15,1967 at approximately 5 p.m., U.S. Highway 35 bridge connecting Point Pleasant, West Virginia and Kanauga, Ohio suddenly collapsed into the Ohio River. At the time of failure, thirty- seven vehicles were crossing the bridge span, and thirty-one of those automobiles fell with the bridge. Forty- six individuals perished with the buckling of the bridge and nine were seriously injured.

Leo was one of the last cars to cross the bridge right before it fell. When he got home that evening, his wife was in tears - glad he was alive.

9. had no idea there were that many missing Americans.
It does make one ponder, with that kind of a number why was * so slow to react to even locate US citizens. Peace be unto them and their loved ones!

10. There are a lot of internet sites to help find victims
Some of them, mostly for other countries, are mentioned in the article cited in this thread:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x2886583

We need to locate a "master page" that gathers together and constantly updates these victim search sites and link to it. Or perhaps people on the DU board could help to put together such a site? (I know nothing about web page construction, unfortunately, but I have great confidence in the talent, enthusiasm, and generosity represented by the DU community.)

11. Mattress saves baby from killer tsunami

Taking a moment to look for a tidbit of good news amongst all of this...little miracle baby:

http://www.navhindtimes.com/stories.php?part=news&Story_ID=122924

Kuala Lumpur Dec 28: A 20-day-old baby sleeping on a mattress survived when she floated to safety after Malaysia’s Penang island was hit by killer tidal waves, local media reported.S Tulasi was sleeping in a room behind her father’s food stall on Penang’s popular Batu Ferringhi beach when the waves hit.

“We were all caught off guard. I was thrown several metres away but managed to hold onto one of the posts,” Mr A Suppiah (55) was quoted as saying by the Bernama news agency.

His wife, Ms Annal Mary (40) fought her way through the swirling waters to the room where the baby was sleeping. “Thank God the mattress was floating in about 1.5 metres of water and my baby was crying,” said Mr Suppiah.

According to official police figures, at least 60 people have been killed and nearly 200 injured in Malaysia by huge tidal waves triggered by a massive earthquake off the Indonesian coast.
