Fewer Today Believe Bush Will Win in 2004 (Fox Poll 49%)
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,97174,00.html

Only about half of Americans now think President George W. Bush will be reelected next year, a considerable drop from earlier surveys. The barrage coming from nine Democratic presidential contenders may, at least in part, have precipitated the decline.

In the latest FOX News national poll of registered voters, those believing President Bush will win in 2004 stands at 49 percent, down from 61 percent in May 2003 and 60 percent in April 2002. The decline was not only among Democrats, but also Republicans. Four months ago, 85 percent of Republicans thought Bush would be reelected, while 72 percent believe so now.

<snip>

When asked which Democrat would win the party’s nomination, the top choice among Democrats, Republicans and independents was former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean (search), followed by Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry (search). Even though New York Sen. Hillary Clinton (search) has said she will not run in 2004, as many voters think she will be the Democratic nominee as think (announced candidate) Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman (search) will be. At this early stage, four months before the first primary election and 14 months before the general election, over half say they do not know which candidate will win the nomination.

Since last month, Kerry has gained four points and currently stands at 17 percent among Democrats when asked which candidate they would vote for if the primary were held today. That puts Kerry ever so slightly ahead of Lieberman (16 percent) and Dean (14 percent).

4. Careful, though...
Americans love to root for the underdog, too. MF has referred to himself as such.

So complacency on our part won't cut it, either. I want to see his (re-)elect figures at 2%, max -- where only Rover, Rumsfeld, Pickles, and Barney will vote for him (and we're working on Barney).

7. Don't forget Spot
But since he was dropped Barney might be easier to convince to vote for the Dem.

3. Your post seems to contradict itself
"When asked which Democrat would win the party’s nomination, the top choice among Democrats, Republicans and independents was former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean"

That puts Kerry ever so slightly ahead of Lieberman (16 percent) and Dean (14 percent).
What are we to make of the contradiction? Is the top choice Dean or is Dean trailing both Kerry and Leiberman?

11. who will you vote for vs. who will win
According to the article, when asked which Dem would win the nomination, Dean was the top choice among Dems, Reps, and Independents. Kerry, on the other hand, is the top choice among Democrats alone who were asked who they would be voting for in the primary.

Who I plan to vote for and who I think will win the nomination are two very different questions.

5. "The barrage coming from nine Democratic ... contenders"
Typical of FOX News. The public are just mindless puppets easily swayed by a "barrage" of negative p.r. People don't make judgments. They only have opinions. FOX doesn't seem to think that Bush's plummeting popularity could have any thing to do with his own failures or that voters can readily make up their own minds.

10. Maybe They Should Have Put It More Like..
"Despite our best efforts to spin 'the presidents' favorability ratings, the barrage coming from nine Democratic contenders has influenced pollsters to think for themselves".

13. Yeah. Fox Can't Help But Editorialize Every News Story.
In this case they can't even resist dropping their bullshit into the story into the second paragraph, they were compelled to color the news in the first paragraph.

I love that Bush's drop with the American people could not have anything to do with 9 million unemployed and the Iraqi disaster. No, instead, Bush's "decline" of popularity --- in spite of all the hard work from Roger Ailes at Fox -- "may, at least in part" to the nine Democrats. Ha!
