An earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale struck under the sea off Indonesia's Sumatra Islands on Saturday afternoon, the State Seismological Bureau of China said in Beijing.

The tremor took place at about 410 kilometres from the epicentre of last Sunday's earthquake, which measured 9.0 on the Richter scale and unleashed tsunamis, which killed at least 125,000 people around Asia.

The tremor happened at 5.2 degrees north latitude and 92.3 degrees east longitude, Xinhua news agency, citing the bureau, reported.

9. The 13th Plate
The first indication that something was happening on
Krakatoa was when a large earthquake struck the
area.

10. I've never seen such activity
check out this link: http://aslwww.cr.usgs.gov/Seismic_Data/heli2.shtml

It is updated every 10 minutes. Other times when I've looked at this site, there have been only small squiggles on the seismographs.

11. Could you give me perspective, FlaGranny
I mean the waves look to be going off the charts.
Is this normal. Shouldn't the band be
increased to get all activity on
the chart?

Major Tsunamis in South Asia
Though rare and relatively unheard of, tsunamis have struck
the shores of South Asia in the past. The deadliest was in
1945 which originated off the Mekran coast in Pakistan
and caused deaths as far as Mumbai. In earliest known
tsunami occurred in the Bay of Bengal in 1762, caused by
an earthquake on Myanmar's,  Arakan
Coast.

In relation to the Indian plate, the Australian Plate is
moving counterclockwise, the Northwestern University
scientists calculated. In the western part of the new
plate boundary, the plates are moving away from each
other. To the east, the Australian Plate is converging on
the Indian Plate, they said. If the theory was correct, the
ocean floor in the eastern part of the new plate boundary
should be compressed, buckled, cracked and eventually
thrust upward along the cracks.
