JAKARTA, Indonesia, Jan. 1 -- Japan on Saturday raised its contribution of financial assistance to Indian Ocean nations affected by the tsunami to $500 million in a pledge that makes Tokyo the single largest donor of aid for the disaster.

... (per capita) that's the equivalent of over $1 billion from the US - triple the assistance offered by the US.
