Senator Says Lifetime Terror Detentions 'Bad Idea'
Edited on Sun Jan-02-05 01:36 PM by tuvor
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A reported U.S. plan to keep some suspected terrorists imprisoned for a lifetime even if the government lacks evidence to charge them in courts was swiftly condemned on Sunday as a "bad idea" by a leading Republican senator.

The Pentagon (news - web sites) and the CIA have asked the White House to decide on a more permanent approach for those it was unwilling to set free or turn over to U.S. or foreign courts, the Washington Post said in a report that cited intelligence, defense and diplomatic officials.

Some detentions could potentially last a lifetime, the newspaper said.

Influential senators denounced the idea as probably unconstitutional.

ON EDIT: If they can cross of the "self-evident" part of the Declaration of Independence that all men are created equal, and get away with it, what parts of which American cornerstone documents will get crossed off next?

2. Gee...you think?
Detaining someone without charges for the rest of their lives is probably the most reprehensible and anti-American thing I can possibly think of.

4. Gosh, now we've got U.S. Senators reading the Constitution.
What is this world coming to? And to think, the Constitution would have been so much easier to read before they started shredding it.

Holy crap in a handbasket. If a Dem had pitched this idea he'd be out of work right now and be burned in effigy by the public. Reps get told it's probably a bad idea.

EDIT: Sorry, that didn't do it for me.
