U.S. Gave $1B in Faith-Based Funds in 2003

Many of these groups have entirely secular missions and some organizations were surprised to find their names on a list of faith-based groups provided to The Associated Press by the White House.

"Someone has obviously designated us a faith-based organization, but we don't recognize ourselves as that," said Stacey Denaux, executive director of Crisis Ministries, a homeless shelter and soup kitchen in Charleston, S.C.

Other grant recipients are religious, offering social service programs that the government may have deemed too religious to receive money before President Bush (news - web sites) took office.

Visitors to TMM Family Services in Tucson, Ariz., which received $25,000 for housing counseling, are greeted by a picture of Jesus and quotes from the Bible.

"We believe that people being connected to the faith of their choice is important to them having a productive life," said Don Strauch, an ordained minister and executive director of the group, which offers a variety of social services. "Just because we take government money doesn't mean we back down on that philosophy."

1. Get the money, preach the vote
that is what it amounts to.

The president that gives them the money, gets to be the one who is preached about from the pulpit. In glowing terms, of course.

It is a recipe for government control over any particular religion, which I am sure, all those religions would love to have. Right?

They do not realize the quicksand they have sucked themselves into. If they accept government welfare, they are invariably obliged and invariably shakled. In this case, they willingly shakle themselves to George Bush and his fascism.

and they think it would help them spread the word of Jesus,as ordered, who said render unto Caesar, etc. because by this welfare money, it has freed up other monies for them to send their missionaries to Afganistan, Iraq and any other place, to disrespect the religion of those in that culture.

They get my money--I demand to see where and how they spent it.

Further, why should I pay to have a religion fostered, in spite of the fact they provide food to the hungry, who first must pledge alligance to that religion, and to that president? Thre are no restrictions on proselytizing at all, on those who receive this money.

This is a corruption, and if it is not now, it soon will be, mark my words.
