Iraqi candidates craving coverage

For his first six months in office, Iraqi interim Prime Minister Ayad Allawi was mostly hostile to the news media - especially the Arab media. The Al-Jazeera network was barred from reporting in Iraq (news - web sites) by his order, and other outlets got scant access.

One of his favorite targets was reporter Amin Nakoozi of the pan-Arab satellite channel Al-Arabiya, which Allawi's government said was biased in favor of the insurgents attacking U.S. troops and Iraqi government security forces.

Funny how an election can change things.

This week Al-Arabiya, which Allawi also banned from Iraq for a while, is running an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at Allawi's life. It's called Secrets of Iraq's No. 1 figure. The host of the program: Amin Nakoozi.

Allawi has been using the perquisites of office as though he studied at the feet of an American president. On every state occasion, he uses government-controlled television to deliver nationwide, prime-time speeches.
