Elder Bush, Clinton to Lead Relief Effort
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story2&u=/ap/20050103/ap_on_go_pr_wh/bush_tsunami

President Bush has tapped former Presidents Clinton and Bush to lead a nationwide charitable fund-raising effort for victims of the Asian tsunamis, the White House announced Monday.

The two men will lead an effort "to encourage the American people and American businesses to support, through private contributions, non-governmental and international organizations" relief and reconstruction to areas devastated by the tsunamis, White House press secretary Scott McClellan said.

The president was announcing the effort in the White House's Roosevelt Room with the two former presidents at his side.

Afterward, Bush was paying brief visits to the embassies of the four nations — Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and Thailand — hit hardest by the disaster. Bush was to sign condolence books at each embassy, McClellan said.

1. AS great as that is three Bushes being involved makes me nervous
AS I posted (to NO response) over the weekend this whole thing with Jeb going there is the perfect money laundering operation-okay tin foil hat stuff but hey

Also can anyone be as happy as Colin has been about this whole thing. I have never seen him smile/laugh as much as he has since the first press conference last week. He seems to be loving this natural disaster thing.

53. My first thought: When will they announce "Neil Bush drowns in 'family'
pool."...and Jeb went to pick up Neil's body.

You know, Neil back in Thailand for one of those "unexpected" knocks on his hotel door...gets caught in tsunami....and they cover it up because it was another of Neil's sex trips.

8. Bush/Bush/Bush/Clinton Fundraiser
Regrettably, Bush's policy of taxing the poor guy and bleeding
government money out the window means that people making under
something like $200,000 will practically be giving away 1.35x
as much money as their better-earning counterparts. In this
case, per usual with Mr. B-S-, I am doused with a feeling of
once again, having been suckered. I'd rather give 10 days off
to the soldiers, save the money on munitions and gas, blood
and body bags in Iraq and donate the money accordingly.

...that little crack about Bush not wanting to go before the cameras with an empty statement like "I feel your pain."

That's what makes Clinton great...that comment was made and he still stepped up to the task.

11. Exactly.
While the Bush administration is making sarcastic little comments about whether Clinton should "speak," Big Dog is sitting there thinking "This is a frigging disaster...we need to HELP, and do it NOW."

I'll bet it KILLED little Scotty McClellan to have to stand in front of reporters and announce Clinton's involvement without taking a poke at him. I can almost see the hole he must have bit through his tongue, the little beady-eyed weasel.

28. Yes....with a crucial Electoral Vote coming up in Congress, it's worrying
that Chimp would do this "alliance." Clinton doesn't need to work with them. He could work on his own with other groups. Didn't he do that with Somalian relief?

What is this...a joining together to make the Chimp look legit while Activists fighting for Democracy here are working the fax machines to death trying to educate our Senate and House Members?

Clinton is too close to Blair, and Blair and Bush are twins. This is very disturbing.

I agree.

This is not about an open heart for the victims. As has been stated on this thread, Clinton has no need of the bushistas to form a coalition to help. He has more than enough contacts throughout the world that would be more than happy to join w/him.

And this was announced three days before the electoral certification?

Just plain creepy!

crediblity in terms of having an interest in humanitarian undertakings after the first few days when they dissed Clinton, he made a couple of creepy statements, and obviously his crew wasn't paying that much attention as they came up with those tiny amounts of aid....even Campbell Brown called it "insensitive."

I think this works in Bush's favor far more than it reminds people of Clinton's abilities.

And now we see Clinton on Larry King with Bush I, I guess. This reminds of Clinton with Dole, that nasty viper who was so vicious against Wes Clark.

Sorry, I'd rather Clinton wasn't there. He may have been strongarmed or just feels he as to be there because he's an ex-Prez...but, Jimmy Carter wasn't there. He was very harsh towards Bush in his speech at the Convention and he has been consistent in his anti-Bush comments. I'm sure he's working on something via Habitat.....Likewise, Clinton through his foundation could probably be very effective without having to stand there with Bush. In some of the pictures he doesn't look particularly happy either.

Bush 41 and Clinton will bring in the money. But I want to know how much Bush the father, the son and Clinton give to the coffers for this disaster.

Clinton does not belong on this PR mission. It is a Bush manipulation because he did not want to interrupt his vacation nor donate any money to this disaster.

Partisan politics in the the midst of tragedy? You bet. Particularly when the compassion is so transparent.

Clinton is a pawn and looks like he will do anything for some newsprint and TV face time. Ugh.

Prez Clinton alone can handle the whole situation. He is highly respected and loved throughout the world. The Bushes need that Clinton power to bring credibility to their lies. The Bushes have put Prez Clinton in the middle, no way he could have declined knowing that the Bushes are using him for their own personal agenda.

CNN is all about the Bush/Military/Powell/Jebby/and the white kid found after the tsunami. They are really making me sick to my stomach.

to be used. He does miss the limelight and action, and this is an opportunity for him on that level.
On another level, possibly he realizes that this is an incredible opportunity to show the rethugs that more political influence can be gained by helping people lift themselves up when you give them 'welfare' help when needed, than hitting them over the head with bombs & guns.

27. Georgie's Modus Operandi
As he did during 9/11 Georgie had to come out of his hole due to the comments from Bill Clinton and the humanitarian Americans and the "Liberal" christians who immediately took control and started raising funds and supplies for the disaster effort.

Georgie is incapable of dealing diplomatically with Nations and peoples that are culturally different (this can be his fellow Americans), so he had to call out daddy and his nemisis Bill Clinton.

The World should now accept that George W. Bush has become the world leader in this global disaster?

"Lookit me, I got a SECOND TERM, so shut up, old man!" Or words to that effect. Remember when he challenged his dad to a fistfight, after Poppy scolded him for driving drunk and running over the neighbor's trash cans. And I've heard numerous examples of Georgie putting his feet on his mom's coffee table, and smirking when anybody protested.

Admittedly I am not GHWB's biggest fan, but I credit him with some restraint, and having enough manners that he didn't snub people openly. I fear that any influence he might have had over * has now vanished, thanks to that "mandate" Georgie is trumpeting about.

Clinton couldn't decline - he cares to much about the victims plus it makes all the right wing a_holes who criticized Clinton look like the fools they are. I love that aspect.

30. BBC: US presidents in tsunami aid plea
plea

President George W Bush and two of his predecessors, Bill Clinton and George Bush Senior, have called on Americans to aid the Asian tsunami's victims.

The three men appeared together in the Roosevelt Room at the White House to issue a joint appeal to private citizens and businesses.

The Bush administration has already pledged $350m (£182m) and the US Navy is delivering aid to remote areas.

Several thousand Americans have been reported missing in the disaster area.

I think he is a great choice to organize the disaster relief, but I feel like he sold his soul when he stood up in support of this EVIL family at the opening of his presidential museum. I hope he is just trying to keep their attention diverted from what is really going on, but I'm beginning to think he really doesn't have any problem with the way they have destroyed this country!

world leader ever, and the greatest national leader, but he's too nice a guy to be an attack dog.

I don't think he'd be much good on this board for that reason. He's just that wee bit too intelligent. We need to have the little mongrel aggressiveness of the Republican, as well as their serpentine deviousness/low cunning, but he's a St Bernard, brandy barrel and all. Perhaps, the only man for whom even consummate statesmanship comes as naturally as breathing. That was our tragedy... that he was and remains, by his very nature, above the fray.

If he ever returns to politics, and you say to him, "This time, no more Mr Nice Guy, Bill!", you'll be wasting your breath. Pray God he'll return one day to a political scene, where civic responsibility and respect for everyone, including at least the more Christians in the opposition, has again become the norm, and is no longer a distant dream.

message to HAVE A MESSAGE AND STICK TO IT! As much as I admire Clinton, the party needs to realize he is one of the very few that can get away with wishy-washy due to his smooth talking. He is THE most powerful speaker on the face of the earth! If he would just realize that and stand the hell up to Bush he could accomplish a lot for this party!

What's more, Clinton will be effective unlike the three B's. 44. I think the bar code story was a bit of a myth
IIRC, GWHB expressed admiration for the supermarket's computer systems that made it sound like he'd never encountered a retail scanner before. I find it very hard to believe that he was really as clueless as that.

(See also the Quayle "potatoe" cue-card story.)

Hey, it WORKED--our side got some great mileage out of it--but I'm willing to acknowledge that it was probably just another campaign story that had spun out of the reThugs' control.

58. Why am I unhappy about Clinton?
First they reacted slowly and sleepily with a pitiful 15 million for aid. Then they upped it to 35 million, now 350 million and they are conducting a major publicity campaign from it.

Now it is all complicated with Clinton joining the Bushes.

I think Clinton could have done something on his own or with Carter and Gore.

After over a decade of defending him...I don't know why he has to do this token thing and aid the marionette and the cabal.

The only postiive I have is the cabal trying to explain this it Scaife and Meese and Gray and a few others common Clinton haters.

Bill and Hillary Clinton are on my watch list.

The Tsunami was a tragedy and a disaster, major, major assistance is needed. Tens of thousands are dead and millions are in jeopardy. We know shrub is incompetent - I for one am glad Clinton is involved. I don't even care right now if it does reflect good on the Shrub - he is enough of a f_ck up and embarrassment as a President. I want him to stick his tail between his legs and ask for help everywhere. Maybe we can have a little hope he is practicing the 12 steps of a recovering fascist dictator.

Does anyone think that citizens of this country haven't already acted independently?

Clinton saved the Bushes.

Maybe he'll keep them honest.

I just don't like that he did this.

Have you heard how the cpns (corporate propaganda networks) are playing the religiousity and saintlihood of Bush? And...they are covering for him in every which way they can about the missing week in the life of Bush and his cabal and our poor start out of the gate.

Do you think there is anyone around the world who wasn't affected by the tsumani that doesn't know about our administration's heartless, tasteless, and crappy reaction?

I will always know that there initial reaction was one of pompousness and contempt for foreigners, especially those from Moslem countries (except for the Saudi family).

It made me sick, I know that. He's not my president.

I get such a kick out of the fact that they had to swallow their pride and ask Clinton, and I really do believe he's just too good hearted to care about politics in a disaster of this magnitude. Besides that, he is friends with most of the leaders "*" has made enemies of. I think it's not in him to be as cynical as many of us are. He is there to help. Now, I don't believe that about any of the other 3 - and this was probably most inconvenient to GW when he was trying to vacation in peace. I hope Clinton makes them look like the idiots they are during their travels together.

I don't think so. Most likely this was Poppy's brainstorm.
It was figured that if Clinton went out on his own or with other Dems to lead a Relief Effort that it would look even worse than it has been looking. Clinton likes Poppy. Don't ask me why.

'spoiled Hollywood liberals'. I saw a brief portion of the press conference with the 2 Bushes and Bill, and even Poppy kept nodding when Clinton spoke. He's a great fundraiser and is truly empathic when it comes to other peoples' suffering. He was involved with Bob Dole in collecting funds to build the WW2 memorial, and when I saw them interviewed, Dole said something like 'don't thank me; President Clinton's the one who got people to donate.' A few days of Clinton working the phones will just embarass Bush more, even if their goal was to exploit him.

Clinton continually outshone and outspoke daddy bush, who looked like a sourfaced prune for much of the time while Bill was speaking. While Bill talked in grand noble ideals, poppy kept saying how caring his son was and likening this tragedy and coming together to to the iraq war. Bill is smart to use this to subtly shine a light on their differences, as well as the overriding mission of helping these people.
