US commander: Afghan detainee who died complained snake had bitten him
Edited on Mon Jan-03-05 12:57 PM by Barrett808
KABUL, Afghanistan A military commander is offering a possible explanation for the death of an Afghan man in U-S custody last year.

Colonel Gary Cheek says the prisoner at a base in eastern Afghanistan complained he'd been bitten by a snake, just hours before his lifeless body was discovered. Cheek says the man wasn't abused.

US authorities say they're awaiting autopsy results.

The group Human Rights Watch cited the case last month, in accusing the Pentagon of dragging its feet on the investigation of eight detainee deaths in Afghanistan.

The dead man's family told Afghan investigators his body was bruised when they retrieved it from the American base.
