Stem Cells Reverse Parkinson's in Monkeys
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Stem cells taken from tiny monkey embryos and implanted in the brain reversed some of the Parkinson's symptoms in monkeys used to study the disease, Japanese researchers reported on Monday.

Their study, published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, supports arguments that stem cells taken from days-old embryos can be used to replace damaged tissues in a range of diseases, experts said.

But they also cautioned that the study was preliminary and needed much more follow-up.

Yasushi Takagi and colleagues at Kyoto University grew stem cells from early monkey embryos and coaxed them into becoming, or differentiating into, neurons. They then transplanted these into the brains of monkeys who had been given a Parkinson's-like condition using chemical damage.

3. Japan is also creating stem cells from mouse cells
http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/index-e.htm

husband has Parkinson's.. we are hooked up to terrific doctors (who have it themselves) and spreading studies to us. Yes.. this is true. Also a fellow in China is curing paralysis by injecting cells into spinal fluid..he says he has no idea what he is doing.. but many are flocking there.

Just received german medical journal that was translated by doctor friend re study that we all believe to be true...statin drugs are creating Parkinson's as well.

11. I have an uncle with Parkinson's - in final stages in a nursing home.
I wonder if you could email me that study from Germany. I believe he has a familial hypercholesterolemia and was on statins almost from the moment they first appeared on the market. PM me if you have it or can send me the details so I can order it from PubMed/LonesomeDoc.

12. medeak, I think you've misunderstood
The shots are at the bushies' reluctance to acknowledge the advancements that science would allow.

Each comment relates to some dumb thing said by admin types- for example, Laura Bush has said that stem cell research gives "false hope", her premise being that that's enough of a reason to dump it.

I don't believe anyone here underestimates the misery that discovery could alleviate. It's the thwarting of discovery that riles up the "flippant attitude" that you noted.

9. If embryonic stem cell research is extremely effective in treating disease
It will be interesting to see how fundamentalist religious people re-evaluate their theology in order to take advantage of it. Because you know they will.
