'Aging' crisis looms for Utah
Gee, do you think Red State aging Repukes care about what will happen to social security??

snip..

The state's triple-A bond rating and rainy day savings account helped Utah weather the nation's financial downturn much better than did most states.

A lawmaker hopes her colleagues will take a similar approach and prepare now for another fiscal crisis that looms, involving Utah's seniors.

"Planning will save us money in the long haul," said Rep. Pat Jones, D-Salt Lake. "We are going to explode in terms of our senior population. . . . It will sneak up on us if we do not deal with it."

1. the "aging of America" is NO FREAKING SURPRISE
That's precisely why PLANNING for it YEARS ago, iinstead of spending every stinking DIME WE prepaid for our old age would have been a "good thing" (to quote Martha)..

Sorry ole chaps..but if the government squandered the "extra" we have been paying for almost 50 years, well...they will just have to buy a few less airplanes or pad a few less wallets for their pals..

I doubt seriously that we boomers will just say.."nevermind"

2. UT might have even more of a problem since LDS members have
to give 10% of their income to the church. just think how much money they could have socked into savings if they gave say...5%? 2%..

3. know accountant in SLC who is not LDS
he has thriving business unlike most people who are "not in the good book"

It seems Mormons don't want accountants who are in the church as they have to be honest re tithing.

4. The aging problem will affect many states who are not growing in
jobs and population. When was the last time you heard about a boom in Mo? I grew up in Pgh. Pa. and Pgh. & and State of Pa are having a terrible time just trying to maintain their tax base. Business have been moving out of the rust belt for years for many different reasons, but it leaves behind large blocks of retirees. Their homes aren't increasing in value, the majority of their income isn't taxable since it's mostly SS, and all social programs and services are being cut radically.

This is not something new. It has been slowly happening for many years, and has now become so severe, it can't be hidden anymore.

7. Pennsylvania polka
Funny how businesses leave so many parts of my beloved Pa., but we still have the same number of state legislators who are predominantly repukes who keep raising their own salaries, run unopposed every term and keep getting re-elected. Why are voters so stupid? Maybe because the newspapers have football on the front page all the time?

8. You're right about the politics, but Football has nothing to do with it.
I doubt there's a bigger Steeler fan in the State of Georgia than I am!!!! I have one winter jacket, and it's a terrific black & gold with the Steeler emblem on the front and STEELERS embroidered across the back! I have only one windbreaaker, and it's the same as my winter Steeler one, but no lining. The Steelers don't hide how I feel about Santorum, and my friends who still live in PA tell me that Rendell has done a good job with the resources he has since being elected.

Why these idiots run unopposed is something I don't understand at all. I have the same gripe here in Ga. In this las election, there was NO opposition candidate to any of the state or local incumbants!!! I have asked every Dem resource I can find to explain why...and have received NO ANSWER!

The closest I got to a response was from a member on DU who said "Why don't YOU run?" I would try if I could, but I can drive anymore, and I doubt that would enable me to be a very good candidate in a campaign. I'm going to keep asking and pushing people to get involved, and do the same with my friends in Pa. I hope you'll do the same.

As for the Steelers.....I HOPE THEY WIN THE SUPER BOWL IN 2005!!!!!

6. Oh, that's OK.
I'm sure the LDS will leap into the breach with all their money and come up with a solution. That's what our faith-based society is all about, isn't it? <sarcasm off>
