Parents protest kids of gay pair

A group at a Catholic school is upset the diocese allowed the couple to enroll their kindergartners.

By FERMIN LEAL
The Orange County Register

COSTA MESA – A group of parents and parishioners at St. John the Baptist School has accused the Diocese of Orange of defying church doctrine after officials allowed the children of a gay couple to enroll at the Catholic school.

The group of about three dozen is demanding the church adopt a policy that all parents must sign a letter in which they agree to abide by Catholic principles, and all teachers should tell students that same-sex marriages and adoptions by gay parents do not adhere to Catholic beliefs and have been condemned by Pope John Paul II.

(snip)

But church officials say singling out gay parents and not divorced parents, couples who wed outside the Catholic church, parents who use birth control, and scores of others not conforming to traditional Catholic ideals would be "discriminatory and unfair."..Furthermore, Horan said, the kindergarten- through eighth-grade campus is a private school, and if parents don't approve of who is allowed to attend, they have the option to enroll their children elsewhere.

(snip)

The parents and parishioners say the church is directly defying a 2003 edict by the pope in which he called upon all Catholics to strongly protest same-sex unions. The pontiff's appeal was in response to the scores of gay couples in the United States that year who were flocking to municipalities where same-sex marriages were legalized.

1. Damn! Those brave, pinched little souls
Taking on a couple of five-year-olds. It's good to see that the school authorities are rightly ignoring these loonies. At least for now.

6. No kidding! Kick the protester's kids out of their school instead.
It would fun to hear the parents have to explain that to their kids.

"You see Johnny and Mary, Mommy and Daddy are bigots. We hate people not like us. Therefore, you will never be able to see your friends again!"

5. Not "Baptists", the school is named after Saint John
who was, in fact, John the Baptist, thus the name.

In any event, regardless of their view of the parental units, to take it out on the children violates all biblical and Christian principles.

Ah well, hypocrisy, thy name is religion (for the most part).

12. Well, I wouldn't put it past them,
but at least so far the Baptist Church hasn't meddled in the affairs of the school. The school is named for St. John "the Baptist", or St. John the Baptizer, the chap who wore camel skins and dined on locusts and honey while preaching the coming of the Messiah. According to the Gospels, it was he who baptized Jesus.

8. Catholics are NOT fundies although the Baptists, Republicans and those
protesting parents are trying to turn it that way.

The Baptists think all the Catholics are going to hell. That we are pagans or something.
