U.S. panel urged to open audit of Shelley (CA Sec of State)

The chief author of the law that sent nearly $4 billion to states for nonpartisan voter education funds called Monday for a federal inquiry into how Secretary of State Kevin Shelley spent California's share of the money.

Rep. Bob Ney, chairman of the House Administration Committee, urged the Election Assistance Commission to conduct a special audit to determine whether Shelley violated federal rules by spending some of the state's voting funds on contracts with Democratic operatives who attended fund-raisers and other partisan events. The federal funds were meant to be used to replace outdated voting machines and for other nonpartisan programs.

"I think it would be good for them to take a look at it," said Ney, R- Ohio, who sponsored the 2002 Help America Vote Act.

2. Shelly stood up to the voting machine companies
and now he's the one being investigated.

Typical repub tactics. Quick, look over here. See how corrupt Shelly is? See, it's not the machines, it's the people.

4. Well, I'm sure that Mr. Ney
Perish the thought that this should be partisan politics! I'm sure we all recall what a bulldog for truth and justice Mr. Ney was during the Floriduh 2000 debacle, when he vigorously and tirelessly investigated Katherine Harris to be sure that her duties as statewide campaign manager for George W. Bush didn't interfere with her duties as secretary of state. And we all remember his famous work when it came out that Ms. Harris made her state office available as the headquarters for the Bush campaign.

Oh wait; Mr. Ney didn't do any of that. Gee, maybe he IS just a partisan hack.

5. Blackwell & Harris were both heading up their states'
committees to elect Bush, but Shelley who refused to buy into the paperless voting edict, is the one being investigated? And the call for the investigation comes from a OH republican? Riiiight.

I smell a rat. A big stinking partisan Republican rat.

9. We cannot allow him to be kicked out. We must insist on an
inverstigation of Blackwell and that guy in Florida. It is past time to sit back and take it. If the Dems in D.C. are not aggressive enough, we have to personally "throw down the gauntlet."
