Anti-Semitism Rising, State Dept. Says

By BARRY SCHWEID, AP Diplomatic Writer

WASHINGTON - A rise in the number of Muslims in Western Europe, many of them poor and uneducated, is contributing to an increase in already deeply rooted anti-Semitism there, the State Department said in a report to Congress.

However, far-right groups still account for a significant proportion of attacks on Jews and Jewish property, the report said.

In eastern Europe, skinheads and other members of the radical political fringe are responsible for most anti-Semitic incidents, according to the report, obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press.

In Russia, Belarus and elsewhere in the former Soviet Union, anti-Semitism remained a serious problem, with most incidents carried out by ultra-nationalists and other far-right elements.

1. Well, nobody has invaded a Jewish Country lately
Seems to me that Anti-Muslim feelings are all the rage at the moment.

But, of course, there is no shame in being Anti-muslim, only at suggesting that Likkudnicks are somehow not doing the right thing. Then you get jumped.

if they have massive spy operations in this country and manipulate our govt into fighting their wars to steal land then people are not going to like them and they will scream anti semitism; but not liking someone because they are whatever color or religious persuasion is bullshit.

by the fbi 5 months before 9/ll posing as art students and casing government buildings all over the us. on 9/11 3 israeli citizens were arrested in nj in a park high fiving and dancing as the towers fell. part of this was reported on fox news but was squelched after 3 days of reporting on this story. justen has several articles on this on www.antiwar.com as for stealing land i guess you don't read about the iraeli settlements on arab land that is the cause of most of the palestinian conflict and the arab hatred of this country.

How about the Israel-firster Michael Leeden, who helped lie us into the war? Doubtful it was at Israel's behest, but only a fool would claim Israel didn't weigh the pros and cons of our illegal venture.

Or how about "A Clean Break: A Strategy for Securing the Realm", written by some prominent Israel-first neocons?

Israel doesn't "run the world" as some claim, but it's hardly uninterested in what we do in the ME.

Not quite.

When someone says that Jews have no right to exist, that's definitely anti-Semitism, without a doubt. But saying that Israel has no right to exist is more like saying that Rhodesia has no right to exist.

If someone said that "Zionists control the US government", then I would just ask them to show me the facts. I think that would be a good response.

But I think Pakistans would argue that it's anti-Pakistani to say that, *and* anti-Muslim, since Pakistan is an Islamic state that derives much of its self-perceived legitimacy from that status.

27. Anti-Zionism Has Become Anti-Semitism
Edited on Tue Jan-04-05 06:55 PM by iamjoy
when Muslims angered at the treatment of their fellow Muslims in Israel decide to desecrate a Jewish cemetery or firebomb a synagogue in Europe, it is hard to separate the two.

And saying Israel has no right to exist does border on anti-Semitism, if it is not that outright. In every other country, Jews face subtle slights. Even in America, with its freedom of religion, Christmas is a national holiday, Yom Kippur (the holiest day to Jews) is not. There is no doubt as to the "dominant" religion in many Western countries. In many Arab nations, it is not so subtle, Islam is the state religion. So, why shouldn't Jews have a country too where the laws and customs of Judaism influence the nation? Furthermore, the problem stems from the Holocaust. In the years leading up to it, some Jews saw the writing on the wall. But so few nations would open their doors to them, or had severely restrictive quotas. One idea behind the concept of a Jewish state was not just Zionism, but the feeling that Jews would always have sanctuary/refuge. Of course, it hasn't quite worked out that way.

Paradoxically, the more Israel is criticized, even when it is just, the more it feels its right to exist, and the rights of Jews to exist are threatened.

This is not to excuse Israeli atrocities in the West Bank, or Israel spying on the U.S.

66. Perception
And saying Israel has no right to exist does border on anti-Semitism, if it is not that outright.

All a matter of perception. I think Northern Ireland has no right to exist and the whole island should be one. But I have no great dislike for Protestant people.

However, a Northern Irish protestant reading that statement would immediately assume I'm biased.

Same goes for the Israel/Palestine debate.

48. the term "anti-Semitism" isn't used to describe "Semites"
Edited on Tue Jan-04-05 08:39 PM by foo_bar
the same way "tidal waves" aren't precipitated by the tide. It's a linguistic Catch-22, because many Jews aren't actually Semitic, most Semites aren't Jewish, and the term "anti-Judaism" implies opposition to the religion, not the people or their presumed bloodline. "anti-Jew" might cover the semantic bases, but I could see why Jews find the term distasteful. So it's a lousy expression, but a universally understood (or purposefully misunderstood) one.

17. Why is such a report on the rise of anti-semitism necessarily
linked to the rise of anti-muslim actions?

This need to compare at every turn isn't productive, and just continues the stupid idea that muslims and jews are somehow natural enemies.

The rise of anti-semitism in Europe should come as no surprise to anyone, and in fact, ought to give any thinking person a great deal of concern. My goodness, we're not so far from the holocaust that we've forgotten the power of that anti-semitism, have we?

The spate of anti-muslim activities, both here and in Europe, should likewise, and for nearly the same reasons, concern us. This isn't a contest as to who is more downtrodden, and it's not something to take lightly and joke about.

Continuing this stupid Jew/Muslim dichotomy is stupid, and worse, it's dangerous. Hate speech, and hateful actions are wrong, period.

I'm alarmed by how many people here seem to be ready to jump on the bandwagon.

72. Nope
I'm still not buying. Hatred for Jews is being taught in many of those Muslim communities, and quite virulently in many Muslim countries. Yes, it's all tied up in hatred of Israel, but it goes far deeper than politics. Wishing it otherwise is naive.

We're talking about actions here, and they ARE on the rise. In the countries where the holocaust happened this has got to cause major concern.

This is not to say that the Muslim populations of Europe aren't also suffering from prejudice and discrimination -- I'm aware that's happening as well.

It's not an either/or -- they're both wrong.

73. Depends on how one defines race, I suppose
and if you look hard enough there isn't any such thing anyway.

That said, they are a people and a people with a distinct heritage, faith and long history.

Throughout much of that history, they have been scapegoated, abused, and persecuted, culiminating in the Holocaust during the 20th century -- when nearly 6 million people were murdered.

You're foolish and naive to beleive that the current spate of hatred is linked only to political differences with the government of Israel. This hatred has roots far deeper. Modern Israel exists in direct reaction to the Holocaust and the refusal of most other countries to take in the persecuted Jews of Europe.

If it makes you feel all self-righteous to write this off as problems with Israel, then you're just going to go ahead I suppose. But you're very wrong, and I hope the world doesn't turn away again as the tide of anti-semitism rises.

83. Given
that one of the main crimes that anti-semites accuse Jews of is "double allegeince", IE, American Jews pretending to be working for America's best interests while actually using America as tool further Israeli/Jewish interets, it is a very interesting debate.

For mine (and as I'm not Jewish I suppose its very much just my two bobs worth) I don't know of any races that are based on religious beliefe which, when we boil it down, what being Jewish is about.

Anyway, as a non-American I find the whole nutbar thing about "the Jews are trying to make America help Israel" thing ridiculous. Of course they (some) are! The US is an immigrant nation and people don't forget where they came from.

People often forget that another very powerful lobby in the US - the Irish American community - effectively lobbied the Clinton White House into leaning on the British Government as regards Northern Ireland. The Brits had the Provos on the run by 1994 b ut luckily their greatest supporters/financiers/arms suppliers in Boston and New York came through with the political support.

It's what happens in immigrant nations like yours and mine (Australia).

107. I'm not even sure you can boil it down to that
there is a very strong cultural component to being Jewish that lives alongside the religious one. In fact, there are many, many non-religious Jews who most definitely consider themselves Jewish. There is a history, a culture, that is tied to the faith, but not exclusive of the faith, if that makes sense.

Not every Jew is a wild-eyed, anything goes supporter of Israel, either. Many American Jews have many, many problems with the current Israeli government and their behavior. That's why I get frustrated when I see any discussion of the rise of anti-semitism in Europe (a very, very scary thing) conflated with more talk of the Israeli-Palestinian issue. They are not inextricably tied. One cannot under any circumstances, excuse anti-semitism because one doesn't agree with the Israeli government. I heartily dislike the Saudi government, but that gives me no excuse to hate Muslims, you know?

As I said to a friend, I'm frustrated by the idea that there's some sort of zero-sum game here: that one must be either a supporter of Jews or Muslims, that one cannot hate the bigotry against both groups. That's just silly thinking, and I'm seeing too much of it here for my taste today.

We speak a language.

That language is English.

In that language, words have meanings.

Anti-semitism means "against the Jews."

I fucking hate that word. I hate that anti-semitism means "against the Jews" b/c it allows people to make the ridiculous argument that "Arabs are semites."

It doesn't matter that Arabs are semites, or that some Jews may not be.

It's irrelevant. And to say otherwise is to play silly semantic games.

Anti-semitism means against the Jews.

language is not a fixed thing , it's always in flux. remember what the word "Tragedy" used to mean 50 years ago ?

most western scholars used to call muslims "mohammedans" which was very widespread.... yet this changed now.

The same with the phrase "anti-semite" , it's so semantically ridicilous
it should be changed .... I think "anti-jewish" is better .

19. In France
Jew and Muslim were living in relative peace.
In Paris for example some place are mixed jew/muslim population and you could see a Rabin in front of a Algerian bar.

But tentions apeared with years. Principaly because of Israelo-Palestinian war, in many judiciary case, it was refered to this conflic.
This is more tense since 9/11 Bush retaliations on Irak. The strong friendship between USA and Israel is feel like an US agretion toward Muslins pushed by Israel...

In fact I think that Bush's "geopolitic" is feeding Muslim integrism.

But there is many common celebrations betwen Jew, Muslims and Christians. And organisations are working together quive well.
You know there is many North African Jews in France (fron formers french colony) they lived with Muslim for centuries.
The problem is really a displacement of west bank conflict and is not so strong. Jews and Muslims are speaking together much more they fight.

But it's not going the good direction since 10 years.

22. Anti-semitism is a reality
Surely not as strong that conservatives and Radical-Sionistes would like, but it have a real existance.

Jews are very easy to use as scapegoats ; one religion, one culture, one great familly. Since eons may "fascists" use these fact to turn population interrest out of power stages.

Radical Muslim are using it, but radical Christian-sionist are using the same principle toward muslims.
A majority of Jews and Muslims are wedged between the two, in great part because of our overmediatised world I agree with you.

26. Anti-semitism
and what is one to make of this statement: During an argument between the Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Foreign Minister Shimon Peres, Peres said that Isralis' policies of continued violence might "turn the US against us". To this Sharon retorted: "EVERY TIME WE DO SOMETHING, YOU TELL ME AMERICANS WILL DO THIS AND WILL DO THAT. I WANT TO TELL YOU SOMETHING VERY CLEAR: DON'T WORRY ABOUT AMERICAN PRESSURE ON ISRAEL; WE, THE JEWISH PEOPLE, CONTROL AMERICA. AND THE AMERICANS KNOW IT." --Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon October 3, 2001 (IAP News)

98. While logically it's possible for a true statement
to have a false premise (F --> T is T, from the old truth tables), it depends on whether the deduction is true.

And it certainly doesn't help citing a false statement to support a statement. It helps move the conclusion from something "known" to something "thought" or even something "believed".

I think the deduction is false. While there are, no doubt, spy operations against the US perpetrated by Israel, I'm not sure these bother me. I also wouldn't much care if Britain spied on us, in the same situation. Many of the incidents are industrial in nature, because we have military tech that could help Israel, and Israel knows that when up against superior numbers, it needs tech to survive in the case of attack. (Ahem ... anti-tank missiles, 1972 was it?)

But most of what the US Congress and executive branch does with regard to Israel, I think, is widely enough supported. Not every point, but overall.

Look high enough up in any of the most powerful corporations (not just media) and you see the Zionist influence. Of course they do not have exclusive control, but control beyond the percentage of the population they represent.

But I'm not really interested in generalizing...my point is that when I see an extreme Zionist in a position of influence and power I have no problem pointing out the obvious.

75. Because Michael Silverman is Jewish he is
manipulating AP stories? Ronald Lauder is manipulating the press?

You align yourself with some strange bedfellows. Here are some that might agree with you.

http://www.inminds.co.uk/boycott-estee-lauder.html

http://www.nationalvanguard.org/story.php?id=4231

David Pringle is the Membership Coordinator of the National Alliance and directs the activities of the Alliance's numerous Local Units. He is a former soldier and successful businessman.

Quotes:

"Our goal is to recruit and reach out to White people. I honestly believe, if things keep going in the way that they're going right now -- and I've never seen it like this in the years that I've been in the Alliance -- I believe that pretty much the sky's the limit in the next five years."

"We're trying to completely rebuild our own White community again. You might say we're building a parallel world to the one of rot and decay that we see around us all the time. To me, what these meetings do is 'charge my batteries'; they get me around people where I don't have to watch what I say, I don't have to worry, you know, about shocked looks when I say something about Israel, or Black IQs, or whatever. They take place in an atmosphere of camaraderie and brotherhood; we have just one class of people there and that's just White men and Women. If you're interested in that, we have quite a few active Units around the country, and I, personally, can put you in contact with any of the people who run them."

___________________________________________________

Now as to the "Zionist" (perish the thought) Lauder.

Lauder gives 100% of his political contributions to Democrats. Here is some information on his foundation.

Why are we helping in these countries? Because half a century after the Holocaust, Jews are still there and want to be Jewish once again. True enough, they may be few in number, but they are determined. They include:

Providing Jewish education is our primary goal. For we know that if you bring Jewish life to children, they will bring it home to their parents, the lost generation that was deprived of its heritage.

It comes down to this: either you agree that every Jewish child deserves a Jewish education, or you do not. If you do not agree, the Jews who remain in Central and Eastern Europe can be written off. Adolf Hitler was successful in destroying a thousand years of Jewish life in that region. The book is closed.

I believe that this book is still open. It will remain so as long as Jews in this part of Europe want to explore their Jewish identity.
Today, half a century after the Holocaust and nearly a decade after the collapse of the Berlin Wall, Jews are free to be Jews and pick up the pieces of a history shattered by Nazism and stifled by Communism. Now that they are picking up those pieces, they need our help to put them together.

<snip>

I firmly believe we are forging a chain that links the past we share to a future possible only if we all work together to help these Jews rightfully reclaim what was denied them for so long -- their Judaism.

RONALD S.LAUDER

http://www.rslfoundation.org/html/about/about.htm

If you are suggesting that a Jewish editor manipulates the news because he/she is Jewish or that a Jewish philanthropist, and a Democratic contributor, (notice that Lauder is not trying to curry favor with the * administration) is controlling the media than you make a perfect case for exactly what anti-semitism is.

25. My neighbor brands his cattle with a swastika -- in CALIFORNIA
My neighbors next door use the swastika to brand their cattle and have a swastika on the side of their truck. They tell the community that it is their 'family crest', right. A sherriff deputy told me that this family also has a 'beautiful collection of Nazi memorabilia which could be in a musuem'. The local utility company told me that they have a cache of grenades. Reported all this to the FBI, but they didn't seem too concerned....

The neighbor's dogs were especially noisy one day, reported this to the sherriff, who came by and one of the canines BIT the sherriff. Still this case hasn't come to the DA's office.

And guess who owns all the land on which the swastika-bearing cattle live? A not-for-profit charity, The Serengeti Foundation, with, I've been told, ties to Folgers Coffee.....

Welcome to MY world

32. Wow, how's THAT for racism?
A rise in the number of Muslims in Western Europe, many of them poor and uneducated, is contributing to an increase in already deeply rooted anti-Semitism there...

So just an increase of Muslims is an increase in anti-Semitism (and no, it couldn't possibly be mere criticism of the rightwing Israeli government's brutal policies). Therefore, Muslims are automatically anti-Semitic.

What tripe. A completely transparent racist stance.

101. No they don't
They think there is no anti semitism. All of it is because of Israel, even when there was no Israel and even where there are no Jews. Don't you know that Jews are the only people who have no rights to nationhood, who have no rights against persecution, who deserve to die no matter where they are, what they believe, what their politics are, no matter how charitable, progressive, liberal.

There is no anti semitism. There is only anti Zionism, right? The Spanish inquisition, the pogroms, the holocaust, all of which occurred in the absence of Israel- they were just done ahead of time anticipating the evil of Israel.

It's OK to hate Jews, burn their schools, blowup their schools.

43. Don't miss the forest behind the trees
Anti-semitism is used here as a convenient propaganda weapon in the fight for global hegemony. If you believe Bush and the oligarchs give two shits about Jews, you might want to take a break from DU to think about just what motivates policy decisions in this day and age.

Clue #1: In Russia, Belarus and elsewhere in the former Soviet Union, anti-Semitism remained a serious problem
Russia is predictably singled out, and so is Belarus, where US interests haven't been able to foment a colorful revolution so far. Note the use of the FSU label - nothing brings back the demon of the anti-semitic commie like a good flashback to the 70s.

Clue #2: Syria condones and supports "a virulent domestic anti-Semitism" as government-supported media demonize Israel and its leaders
Shit, Syria, isn't that the country that also harbors Baathist dead-enders and pro-Zarqawi terrorists hell-bent on getting their dirty brown hands on some of those WMDs that Saddam stashed under the Syrian desert prior to the liberation of Iraq? If you thought those guys were bad for sponsoring the killing of US GIs in the Ramadi province, you won't be surprised that they also support anti-semitism on a global scale.

Clue #3: In Pakistan, where there is no Jewish community, anti-Semitic sentiment fanned by anti-Semitic press articles, is widespread
Now, you can usually expect the Paks to do our bidding, but they sure as hell aren't walking the anti-terror walk in Paktia. Gotta let the bastards know that we've got the anti-semitism gun locked and loaded in case they decide to act all crazy with that Muslim bomb of theirs. In any case, it's good to know we can still depend on trustworthy, pro-Israel allies such as Saudi Arabia, who do well staying out of the report through their diligent prosecution of anti-semitic feeling in the kingdom.

Jew this, Zion that. This is just another way to get the masses goose-stepping to the right drumbeat.

I don't see any specific examples of it referenced. Its all about "perception" and "stereotypes" which are "simply not true." Seems like sort of a straw man argument.

I feel that it is wrong to scapegoat any group of people, by the way. We should all be held individually accountable for our own actions. Sometimes the impetus behind those actions can be a religion or an ideology.

100. Statistics were provided by some countries

<snip>
Rep. Tom Lantos, D-Calif., who pushed for annual State Department reports and for close monitoring through a new office in the department, welcomed the first global report on anti-Semitism.

"It is only a beginning," said Lantos, the senior Democrat on the House committee. "The department must act quickly to appoint an advocate of substantial rank and experience to coordinate our government's response to the current outbreak of anti-Semitic violence."

The report, which covers the period between July 2003 and December 2004, gave no worldwide totals but did include statistics provided by some countries
